What We Offer

As the Manager of Health, Environment and Safety (HES) at Covestro's North American Headquarters in Pittsburgh, this role leads and shapes the health, environment, and safety initiatives for the site, contributing significantly to the well-being of employees and the overall success of the organization. This role is critical in maintaining a safe and healthy work environment for all employees while minimizing risks to both personnel and the environment. This position is responsible for directing and managing occupational safety, process safety, and environmental functions for the Pittsburgh site, including the McClaren Woods location as well as for all employees assigned to these locations.

Major Responsibilities:

Leadership

  • Define and implement HES strategy and initiatives in alignment with internal and external regulations and requirements
  • Drive site commitment to providing a safe and healthy environment
  • Collaborate with various departments to promote a strong and consistent safety culture throughout the site
  • Collaborate with regional Covestro HES managers to ensure consistent application of Core directives.
  • Communicate site HES, procedures, objectives, and strategy clearly and effectively to employees at all levels.
  • Develop and deliver comprehensive site safety training programs for employees at all levels, including field sales/fully remote.
  • Ensure development of new hire orientations and refresher courses on safety procedures.
  • Track safety performance metrics and analyze data to identify trends and recommend improvements
  • Hire, train, supervise, and mentor assigned staff

Emergency Response Leadership

  • Serve as Chief of the site's volunteer Emergency Response Team (ERT)
  • Manage and ensure ERT training, tools, and equipment for emergency readiness
  • Develop, maintain, and communicate emergency response plans.
  • Train employees on emergency and response procedures. (Core 64)

Safety Management

  • Develop, implement, and manage comprehensive regulatory required safety programs, including, but not limited to: hazard communication, control of hazardous energy, and asbestos management
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA's general industry standards and other applicable regulations
  • Oversee the site's process safety program to meet global requirements for Process Hazard Analysis (Core 60) and management of change (Core 62) through development of needed procedures and training
  • Identify potential hazards within the workplace and conduct thorough risk analyses and implement mitigation strategies to minimize risks. (Core 56)
  • Ensure comprehensive site Contractor Safety Program, including training, assessments, and qualification processes for all onsite contractors including: facilities maintenance management provider, soft services providers, capital contractors, maintenance contractors, and other vendors (Core 56)
  • Ensure robust Work Permit process for Covestro and facility management personnel to ensure proper hazard analysis and safe execution of work.

Environmental Management

  • Lead the site's environmental programs, including waste management and recycling efforts (Core 52)
  • Interact with state and local regulatory agencies on environmental matters
  • Develop procedures and processes to manage compliance with environmental permits and regulations and internal requirements
  • Ensure accurate reporting of environmental data to external authorities and internal systems, i.e., DISCOVER (Core 45)

Industrial Hygiene

  • Ensure development and implementation of the site's industrial hygiene program
  • Conduct risk assessments, create and execute sampling plans, and communicate results to employees

Compliance and Audits

  • Ensure all applicable HES regulatory and compliance requirements are identified and maintained in site tracking system (MANAGE)
  • Perform audits to monitor and verify compliance with internal and regulatory HES requirements at local, state, and federal levels.

Incident Investigation

  • Ensure site procedure is in place to investigate workplace accidents, near misses, and injuries to identify root causes and corrective actions based on investigation findings. (Core 63)
  • Oversee the site's incident investigation program in coordination with other departments.

Community Engagement

  • Drive Covestro's community awareness emergency response through partnerships with local agencies and neighbors i.e., Local Emergency Planning Commission (LEPC)

What You Offer

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in occupational safety, or Environmental Science, or Industrial Hygiene, or Engineering, or a related field
  • Minimum of 12 years of experience in Health, Environment, and Safety roles (production or lab experience preferred)
  • In-Depth knowledge of OSHA regulations and environmental compliance requirements

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or other relevant certifications preferred
  • Audit experience preferred
  • Experience with risk management and assessments preferred

  • Ability to drive change and influence diverse organizations across the site to achieve objectives
  • Ability to translate complex HES regulations and requirements into actionable programs and procedures for site employees to follow

  • Project management experience as well as ability to develop continual improvement proposals
