The Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Safety Technologist, under the direction of an advanced provider or physician performs hyperbaric oxygen therapy on approved patients. The Safety Technologist will operate and monitor the hyperbaric chamber and other hyperbaric support systems and performs necessary maintenance to systems daily. Will develop, maintain, and manage a safety program based upon compliance with recognized standards in conjunction with the Medical Director and Ambulatory Operations Manager. The resulting program should demonstrate effective elements of hazard mitigation, while employing recognized risk management concepts.
Education High School Degree/ GED Experience Minimum of three years clinical hyperbaric system operations experienced preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Must possess good verbal and written communications with the ability to carry out detailed written or verbal instructions independently.
- Must have interpersonal skills enough to interact with patients, visitors and other hospital associates and departments.
Licensures, Certifications
- Certification and or licensure in one of the following vocations required: Certified Hyperbaric Technician, NST/Medical Assistant, Respiratory Therapist, Diver Medic, Medical Services Specialist, EMT, Paramedic, Registered Nurse, LPN or LVN, Diving Medical Technician preferred.
- Current CPR Certification (Health Care Provider)
- Successful completion of an approved course from the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society and or the National Board of Diving & Hyperbaric medical Technology, or any online course approved by both the UHMS and NBDHMT
- The Safety Technologist must meet the minimum qualifications stated in the UHMS Facility Guidelines specifically: successfully completed a UHMS, NBDHT- approved hyperbaric safety course and obtain a CHT certification upon eligibility.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail for up to twenty percent (20%) of work time.
- Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time and to lift and/or transport equipment to designated places in the hospital.
Working Conditions
- Direct exposure to adverse or hazardous working conditions (i.e., blood, sputum, etc.) when cleaning and sterilizing equipment.
- Must possess physical ability to move patients with assistance from other personnel and mechanical devices if indicated
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Responsible for the safe and effective operation of the hyperbaric chamber and related support systems.
- Responsible for the day-to-day maintenance of the hyperbaric chamber and related support systems.
- Clean and maintain the equipment according to infection control standards. Maintain continuous quality improvement duties and chart audits. Perform an inventory check and maintain a record of supplies and laundry items. Maintain equipment and checks backup air and oxygen supplies daily.
- Assist in the delivery of patient care appropriate to the level of his/her medical training.
- Prepares patients for treatment by providing explanation of the purpose and procedure of treatment as well as education regarding pre-, post-, and intra treatment information/instructions.
- Collects patient's vital signs and glucose monitoring prior and following therapy and report abnormal signs and symptoms
- Keeps complete, legible and accurate patient records
- Evaluate the patient outcome and meet with the manager and the hyperbaric physician to discuss patient treatment and adjust treatment as necessary. Consult with hyperbaric physician regarding any adverse reactions.
- The Safety Technologist shall work closely with facility management personnel, the Medical Director, and Ambulatory Operation Manager to establish procedures for safe operation and maintenance of the hyperbaric facility.
- The Safety Technologist will make the necessary recommendations for program safety policy and procedures.
- The Safety Technologist has been given the authority to restrict or remove any potential hazardous supply or equipment items from the chamber.
- The responsibility for the care and safety of patents and personnel is that of the Hyperbaric department team, Medical Director, and Ambulatory Operations Manager.
- It is also the responsibility of the Hyperbaric department team, Medical Director, and Ambulatory Operations Manager to insist that adequate rules and regulations with respect to practices and conduct within the hyperbaric facility including qualifications and training of hyperbaric personnel, be met.
- The Medical Director of the hyperbaric department shall work with the Safety Technologist and Ambulatory Operations Manager to establish minimum staff qualifications.

Pay Range $23.53 - $38.57
