Job Summary

The science communicator will assist the editorial services team in promoting FIU as a top, public research university that is committed to excellence in both research and social mobility. The science communicator will actively support FIU faculty discoveries by leading content creation with reporting, writing and editing new releases, research content to influential and national media, and developing visual story telling opportunities for FIU's social media platforms.

  • Writes and edits news releases about impactful research across various departments, colleges and units.
  • Develops and presents research content to key national media outlets with a strategic approach.
  • Develops visual storytelling opportunities for FIU's social media platforms.
  • Curates and produces research news for FIU's flagship channels, including reporting, writing features, finding artwork and posting stories to FIU News and FIU's research magazine to increase traffic and visibility for the university's research enterprise.
  • Communicates scientific advancements and organizational news to internal stakeholders.
  • Works closely with scientists, researchers, and other staff members to understand complex scientific concepts and translate them into accessible formats.
  • Stays up-to-date on current scientific developments and best practices in science communication.
  • Researches and understands target audiences to tailor communication strategies effectively.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and four (4) years of related experience.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in media relations and in writing and editing across a myriad of communication platforms.
  • Possess a basic knowledge of science and be able to read and understand scientific journal articles.
  • Ability to translate complex research to the layperson.
  • Experience with photography and video.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while participating in and contributing to integrated teams and staying current with emerging new trends.
