Position description

The Hsiung Lab (www.hsiunglab.org) is looking for an individual interested in working at the interface of computational biology and experimental biology. Our lab is innovating at the forefront of CRISPR synthetic biology, gene regulation, functional genomics, and tissue biology. Some questions/challenges we are interested in include: 1. How do we engineer cells to turn genes on or off? 2. How do we explore numerous combinations of genetic perturbations in a scalable way? 3. How do we engineer immune recognition of cancer or tissue response to injury? The candidate will contribute to projects on some or all of these topics.

The ideal candidate is one who is computationally capable and interested in analysis of high-throughput CRISPR functional genomics data, including Perturb-seq (CRISPR screen single-cell RNA-seq readout), as well as being involved in the experimental data generation. Prior training in data science, bioinformatics, biostatistics, and/or computer science is desirable, as well as knowledge of and experience in molecular biology. Primary responsibilities are focused on computation and include: devising custom analytical approaches with guidance from the PI; developing software for the lab; and managing computing resources. Responsibilities related to experimental work will depend on the candidate's interest, but may include: molecular cloning, cell culture, processing human and/or mouse tissue samples, and design and execution of high-throughput CRISPR screens. Other responsibilities may include contributing to laboratory organization, maintenance, and inventory management. The responsibilities and expected scientific independence for this position will be determined by the candidate's abilities, with exceptional candidates given more independence in contributing creatively to projects. If interested, successful candidates will receive mentorship on career paths, such as MD or PhD training.

Required qualifications:

* Junior Specialist - Must have (or in process of obtaining) a bachelor's degree (or equivalent degree) or at least 4 years of research experience in one or more of the following: data science, computer science, biostatistics, molecular biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, chemical biology, and/or related fields is required.

* Assistant Specialist - Must have (or in process of obtaining) a Master's degree or a baccalaureate degree with 3 or more years of research experience in one or more of the following: data science, computer science, biostatistics, molecular biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, chemical biology, and/or related fields.

* Associate Specialist - Must have (or in process of obtaining) a Master's degree (or equivalent degree) or five to ten years of experience in one or more of the following: data science, computer science, biostatistics, molecular biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, chemical biology, and/or related fields.

* Full Specialist - Must have (or in process of obtaining) a terminal degree (or equivalent degree) or ten or more years of experience in one or more of the following: data science, computer science, biostatistics, molecular biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, chemical biology, and/or related fields.

Preferred qualifications:

* Prior experience in computational analysis of biological data is prioritized. Wet lab experience in molecular biology laboratory is preferred.
