About the role

The Director of Engineering leads an engineering team that is responsible for the technology enabling a customer, partner or employee product/experience or a company capability. The Director of Engineering is responsible for setting priorities, managing the engineering team, and ultimately shipping the technology that builds value.


What you will do

  • Build a highly technical, encouraging, and inclusive team environment aligning with Symetra's Core Values, Leadership Dedication, and dedication to diversity, equity and inclusion. Collaborate with partners to create a technical strategy for the customer, partner or employee product/experience or company capability you oversee.
  • Cultivate an engineering culture that emphasizes quality, agility, experimentation and continuous delivery. Cultivate a DevSecOps mentality among delivery teams responsible for their systems and services throughout the entire process. Amplify Talent: Coach, mentor and develop a full-stack team of software developers to help them reach their potential.
  • Recruit, hire, grow, and retain engineering and architecture talent. Work with your team on impactful engineering work. Estimate the financial impact of architectural solutions.
  • Lead large, complex initiatives that deliver innovative/modern products and experiences. Able to translate business problems to technology solutions.
  • Responsible for shipping high quality products on time. Architect and build highly reliable, secure, scalable, and performant solutions. Experience in leading critically important cloud native production workloads in AWS using modern serverless technologies.
  • Create effective partnerships with third party partners for service transformation, product delivery and support. Provide leadership and collaboration regarding key technology decisions. Actively pursue the reduction of technology debt where possible and reduce operational risk. Champion user-focused design dedicated to the delivery of exceptional user experience. Comprehensive understanding of software development life cycle.
  • Enthusiastic about staying ahead of modern solutions and trends. Perform ongoing assessments of teams and programs to support continuous improvement and innovation. Support off-hours production support and release activities to ensure high availability of critical systems.


Who You Are



  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience preferred. High school diploma required.
  • 2+ years engineering management experience in high-growth engineering organizations or equivalent experience
  • 5-7+ years of engineering experience as an individual contributor working as a backend / full stack developer.
  • Analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication skills with an ability to take ambiguous information and organize into relevant facts.
  • Cultivates a collaborative working environment built on trust with teams across the organization.
  • Some travel required.

Compensation

Salary Range: $166,400 - $277,400 plus eligibility for annual bonus program


Travel:

Required Training & Professional Development

All newly hired people leaders with direct reports are required to complete a comprehensive leadership development program within their first year. This program includes both virtual and in-person training. The in-person sessions will take place at Symetra's corporate headquarters in Bellevue, Washington. Symetra covers all travel and accommodation expenses.
