Summary:
Reporting to the Senior Vice President CNO directs and ensures the provision of patient care for arrhythmia patients undergoing Electrophysiology studies permanent pacemaker insertions tilt table testing catheter ablations and implantation of cardioverter defibrillators requiring an advanced level of clinical expertise.

Responsibilities:
Develops short-and long-term goals for Electrophysiology as requested. Establishes and implements patient care policies and procedures that are consistent with the hospital*s standards and agreed upon goals. Develops policies procedures and protocols specific to care of patients receiving Electrophysiology services.

Participates in developing man-hour expense and capital budget for Electrophysiology subject to appropriate approvals. Evaluates equipment supply inventory and personnel needs recommending necessary actions. Reviews monthly budget reports preparing and submitting report on variances as necessary.

Interviews hires evaluates and initiates wage and salary actions for Electrophysiology staff consisting of staff nurse patient service aide and a secretary. As necessary provides counsel and implements disciplinary action.

Ensures coordination of Electrophysiology services with those of other hospital departments outside agencies and other health care facilities. Evaluates and resolves problems as they arise between staff patients families and hospital departments regarding patient care and/or integration with other treatments and services. Provides guidance to staff as required.

Audits patient records for documentation of processes implementation of physician prescriptions for care and adherence to policy.

Observes and evaluates care provided to ensure quality within parameters of established standards of practice. Initiates methods to improve quality and delivery of care as necessary. Ensures that facilities and equipment are maintained in aseptic condition.

Monitors and modifies patient and provider appointment schedules to provide for most effective utilization of resources (space time personnel) to accommodate urgent or emergent situations and to provide for optimal patient flow assuming minimal waiting time for patients.

Maintains and enhances professional expertise through participation in appropriate educational activities.

Provides patient support and care as needed throughout EP procedure by assessing vital signs administering IV medications for sedation and arrhythmia treatments necessary and providing rescue procedures such as external defibrillation as necessary.

Post-procedure removes EP catheters and obtains homeostasis assesses patient condition including status of insertion site and peripheral pulses.

Provides patient teaching and support about EP procedure results of testing and reinforces future treatment options.

Serves as a consultant to staff to provide ongoing education about EP procedure.

Responsible for maintaining accurate cardiac recordings throughout the EP procedure performing accurate measurements and interpretation of these recordings as necessary to assist the physician with patient*s diagnosis.

Responsible for the preparation of sterile instruments and catheters prior to procedure and for preparing and maintaining the sterility of the operative site throughout the procedure.

Responsible for obtaining paper tracings video recordings written documentation and computer reports of EP study from which the doctor prepares his reports.

Coordinates ordering maintenance and repair of the EP equipment and supplies.

Provides patient support and care as needed throughout procedure by administering medication assessing vital signs and providing emergency rescue support as needed.

Provides patient teaching and support about pacemaker procedure.

Serves as a consultant to staff and provides ongoing education about pacemaker procedure.

May function as scrub nurse during procedure as needed.

Responsible for maintaining cardiac recordings including evaluation of pacing lead status using PSA analyzer throughout procedure.

Provides patient support and care as needed throughout procedure by administering medications assessing vital signs and providing emergency support as needed.

Responsible for maintaining cardiac recordings throughout procedure.

Provides pre-op and post-op teaching and support to patients and families about ICD device.

Serves as a consultant to staff to provide ongoing education about ICD device.

Assists in operating room with implant sets up and maintains all equipment needed for implant. Assists in defibrillator threshold testing. Assures all vital connections between leads on heart and ICD are correctly placed to assure proper functioning of ICD. Provides back-up rescue defibrillation as necessary.

Evaluates proper functioning of ICD using programmer and/or magnet and adjusts parameter of device as deemed necessary by the patient*s condition and/or as requested by the physician.

Other information:

Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island by the Rhode Island Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

BSN preferred.

Must have current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island.

ACLS certified.

Demonstrated clinical and leadership skills.

Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care patients with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.

EXPERIENCE:

Two years experience as a Nurse Clinician with demonstrated strong clinical skills.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Some exposure to low-level radiation from x-ray equipment and infection from blood samples.

Some hazards of electrical shock from high voltage cables.

Some lifting and pushing of patients and equipment

Hazards are minimized by strict observance of safety procedures.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

Supervisory responsibility for up to 5 FTE*s
