Broward County Cultural Division

The Broward County Cultural Division is a Division of Broward County Government and the designated County Local Arts Agency, responsible for cultivating a rich cultural environment through development of the arts.

The agency is dedicated to the growth and development of the County's arts and cultural infrastructure through public art, community programs, grants to artists and cultural organizations, and marketing initiatives. The Cultural Division administers more than $7 million in grants annually, manages a public art program with a collection of more than 300 pieces, and will celebrate 50 years in 2026.

The division has functional responsibilities for: Public Art, Grants & Sponsorships, Communications & Marketing and Community Engagement & Public Programs.

The Opportunity

The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking a dynamic and strategic leader to join the Cultural Division team as Assistant Director. This position reports to the Division Director and leads a team focused on the development and management of the Division's communications and community programs sections, with a strong emphasis on outward, community-facing initiatives. The Assistant Director will play a crucial role in enhancing the Division's visibility, strengthening community partnerships, and driving the success of programs that engage and serve the diverse cultural community in Broward County.

  • Have the ability to develop strategic plans and successfully implement them working with multiple partners;
  • Apply strong working knowledge of local, national and international urban cultural landscapes in diverse communities;
  • Have the ability to envision how the development of arts and culture can transform communities;
  • Have acquired proven experience in managing and implementing community-based programs and communications strategies, with a track record of successful initiatives;
  • Possess strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate staff;
  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a strong understanding of various media platforms;
  • Appy demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse community stakeholders;
  • Be a strategic thinker with a strong understanding of cultural trends and community needs.

Education, Experience and Certifications

Requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in arts administration, business, the fine and/or performing arts, or closely related field; Master's degree preferred.

A minimum of four (4) years in arts management including two (2) years high level supervisory and administrative experience or closely related experience.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develops and implements strategies to enhance the effectiveness and reach of the Division's community-facing programs and communications efforts.
  • Identifies opportunities for new community partnerships and collaborations that enhance cultural access and participation for all residents. Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of communications and community programs, using data-driven insights to inform continuous improvement.
  • Oversees communications team in the development and execution of comprehensive communications strategies that effectively promote the Division's programs, initiatives, and events to the public with an emphasis on the use of arts and culture to develop the community's identity.
  • Works with staff on the creation and distribution of high-quality content across various planforms, including social media, websites, newsletters, and print materials.
  • Cultivates and maintains strong relationships with community leaders, arts organizations, educational institutions, andother stakeholders to support the Division's mission and programs. Based on the availability of the Director, develops collaborations and sits on standing committees that benefit the division through mutually beneficial partnerships; acts for the Director in his/her absence.
  • Oversees the planning, execution, and evaluation of community programs that align with the Division's goals and address the cultural needs of Broward County's diverse communities. Ensures that programs are inclusive, accessible, andreflective of the community's cultural diversity, fostering a vibrant cultural ecosystem.
  • Collaborates with the Division Director and other senior staff to develop and implement strategic plans that advance the Division's mission and community engagement objectives.
  • Contributes to the Division's long-term planning and policy development efforts, particularly in areas related to community engagement and public relations.
  • Coordinatesprogramactivitieswithinternalandexternalentities,organizations,communitygroups,andcitizens.
  • Assists in developing, implementing and maintaining strategic, fiscal and capital improvement plans for the Cultural Division; attends conferences and public and professional meetings.
  • Monitors financial and budgetary information, provides financial reports to management, and ensures utilization is in compliance with financial policies and procedures.
  • Assistsinplanning,implementing,andcoordinatingdivisionprograms,goals,objectives,policies,andprocedures.
  • Provides support to the Broward County Cultural Council, communicates with Council members, and works with Council Chair to facilitate Council meetings, as needed.
  • Manages or participates in special projects.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

SPECIAL INFORMATION

Compensation and Benefits

The annual salary range for this position is $108,504.42 to $173,172.76. The starting salary will be based upon the knowledge and experience of the individual selected. The State of Florida does not have a state income tax.

The County's benefits include:

  • Florida Retirement System (FRS) - Employees have the choice of two retirement plans: the traditional pension plan with eight years of vesting or the investment plan with one year of vesting.
  • Deferred Compensation - The County offers a voluntary 457 plan offered through three providers: Mission Square, Brighthouse Financial, and Nationwide Retirement Solutions. County matches up to $2,600 a year.
  • Flexible Spending Accounts - Eligible health expenses and dependent care accounts.;
  • Health Savings Accounts - When you elect either of the High Deductible Health Plans (HDHP) and you and your enrolled spouse/domestic partner (if applicable) complete the County's 2025 Engagement Incentive, Broward County will contribute to your Health Savings Account.
  • Vacation and Sick Leave - Leave is accrued biweekly for vacation and sick time; annualized at two weeks of vacation and 12 days of sick time; additionally, 40 hours of job basis leave is granted annually for employees exempt from overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
  • Holidays - Eleven (11) holidays and two (2) personal days.
  • Insurance Coverage - The County offers a variety of benefit plans that employees can purchase including Health, Dental, Vision, Flexible Spending Accounts, Long Term Disability, and Pre-paid Legal. The County subsidizes enrollment in Health and provides a waiver credit if applicable.
  • Life Insurance - The County offers $50,000 of group term life insurance. Employees can purchase additional life insurance for themselves and their dependents and spouse/domestic partner.
  • Additional Benefits - Access to Credit Union, Employee Development and Personal Income Protection Plans are available.
