What Your Job Will Be Like:

Our team is seeking a highly motivated early-career mechanical engineer to join a cross-functional group of engineers and scientists supporting the Intelligence community, Department of Defense, Special Operations, and Industry. The mechanical engineer will develop mechanical designs for advanced RF systems while also engaging in other disciplines, including electronics assembly, software builds, requirements generation, and systems engineering.

Domain expertise in DoD Air, Space, and Ground environments is essential for defining and engineering effective solutions. Projects vary from urgent, quick-reaction requests to longer-term efforts spanning 3-5 years. We develop end-to-end advanced communication systems for National Security applications, utilizing a blend of cyber, computer science, RF design, mechanical design, and electrical engineering to deliver solutions for our customers.

This position requires on-site work in a collaborative electronics laboratory and classified SCI environment, with occasional travel of 6-8 trips per year.

Salary Range:

$99,400 - $193,600

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

• A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and experience defined by the following parameters:

• An Associate's degree in a relevant discipline plus four (4) years of directly related relevant work experience; or

• A High School Diploma plus eight (8) years of directly related relevant work experience.*

• Active DOE Q clearance and SCI-level clearance, which may require a polygraph test.

*Equivalent education and experience must be engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.

Qualifications We Desire:

The ideal R&D, S&E Mechanical Engineer candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:

• Graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).

• Experience with mechanical engineering and product realization in the NNSA complex.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in diverse teams.

Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:

• Two (2) or more years of directly relevant experience.

• Experience developing Mechanical Designs for RF Systems.

• A familiarity with DoD, IC and SOCOM organizations and associated systems and operations and the challenges.

• Experience in novel RF concept or system designs from ideation, development, test, deployment and operations.

• Understanding and experience in systems engineering specifically applied to RF Systems.

• Knowledge of RF, Digital Communications, Electronic Warfare, and Cyber Security domain areas.

• Proven ability to understand and partner with and across a variety of engineering and scientific disciplines.

• Ability and desire to support development work within an electrical lab environment as well as field testing.

About Our Team:

The RF & Systems Electronics Center provides key electronics systems work to a wide variety of nuclear weapons, space, intelligence, and military programs across Sandia and the Nation. The Intelligence RF Communications group focuses on Electromagnetic Warfare applications across the Nation's technology superiority strategies by delivering capabilities for Radio Frequency & spectral dominance, global highly reliable communications, and novel advancements for future strength. We are a highly dynamic set of departments that cross-team to provide integrated engineering systems solutions ranging from core research through prototype development and high-end, fielded products.

The Advanced Engagement Systems department develops multi-domain novel electromagnetic attack & defense concepts and systems with an eye on low size, weight, and power constrained applications. Our customers include a variety of government organizations including the U.S Armed Forces, the Intelligence Community, and Special Operations. Our staff members have a diverse skills base including microwave circuit design, antenna design, signal analysis, digital signal processing, embedded software, and system designs comprised of the latest associated hardware. We partner across the laboratory and the group to bring on other critical skill sets to our multi-disciplinary team to include computer scientists, systems engineers, and cyber engineers. Our design challenges include system development (designing scalable systems, systems integration into host platforms, etc), understanding complex adversary systems and associated vulnerabilities, and signal analysis and generation of RF low probably of detect waveforms.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) SCI security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance and SCI access, both of which require US citizenship.
