Job Summary Clinical nurse leader for a program or area of nursing practice. Utilizes specialized knowledge and skills within major areas of focus, such as patient / family, nurses and nursing practice, and the organization / system. Typically partners with the nurse manager in leading the nursing clinical practice area. This is the journey level for an advanced practice clinical nurse specialist.
The Pediatric Pain Management Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is an advanced practice registered nurse who serves as a pain management nursing expert, leader, consultant, educator, and mentor for the nursing staff and teams at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital - San Francisco and Oakland.
The specialized knowledge and skills required for this role include clinical expertise in pain management nursing; design and implementation of evidence-based practice (EBP); education and mentorship; consultation; performance improvement; and leadership. The Pediatric Pain Management CNS role has three spheres of impact across the health system's pediatric services that include the patient/family, nursing/interprofessional teams, and the organization/health system. This role works collaboratively with the Clinical Practice team to support and ensure high quality standards of nursing care and professional practice to optimize patient, team, and system outcomes. The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement. The salary range for this position is $209,447 - $235,840 (Annual Rate). This position is not represented by a labor union. Department Description The Stad Center for Pediatric Pain, Palliative Care, and Integrative Medicine Services at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals provides care across the continuum from acute to chronic/complex pain to palliative and hospice care and integrative medicine in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. Our comprehensive multidisciplinary approach provides patients and families with the most up to date pain and symptom management therapies that prioritize pain prevention, pain relief, comfort, and healing.
We embrace a multimodal approach to analgesia, which includes integrative therapies, psychosocial support, and pain anesthesia-based modalities to provide the highest quality of care in pain and symptom prevention, assessment, and treatment. Our team is comprised of pediatric pain anesthesiologists, pain hospitalists, palliative care providers, integrative medicine practitioners, nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, registered nurses, social work, spiritual care, and grief and loss support.
This crossbay position serves all BCH campuses; therefore, travel between campuses is required as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years of recent clinical RN experience in the specialty area
- Master's degree from an accredited Nursing program
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of California
- Certified CA Clinical Nurse Specialist, or licensure / certification in another advanced nurse practice discipline (CNS, NP, CRNA, CNM).
- Current American Heart Association CPR certification
- In-depth knowledge of one or more clinical specialty areas, to include diagnoses, treatments, standards of practice and patient / family educational consulting and resources.
- Advanced knowledge of methodology for conducting evidence-based research, data collection, analysis, and reporting.
- Advanced critical thinking and problem-solving skills to assess highly-complex issues and develop multiple options for resolution.
- Advanced interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide education, training, and direction to nursing staff, and to develop positive working relationships with patients, families, employees, and outside agencies as required. Advanced skills in written and verbal communications, with the ability to convey complex and / or sensitive information in a clear and concise manner.
Preferred Qualifications
- Pediatric Pain and Palliative Care Certification obtained within two years of hire
License/Certification
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of California
- Current CA APRN license (CNS, NP, CRNA, CNM)
- Current American Heart Association CPR certification
