The City of Renton is recruiting for an experienced Building Plan Reviewer to join our Community and Economic department. This is an excellent opportunity to be a part of a team that makes an impact to our growing city. In this position you will support the Development Services division by reviewing and evaluating building plan submittals.

Telework Program: The City of Renton supports workers performing in a hybrid capacity (partial telework/in-office) where job responsibilities can be performed remotely. This position may be eligible for a telework arrangement, up to 2 days remote, based on the operational needs of the City and specific Department. Regardless of job title or telework arrangement, City of Renton employees must reside in Washington State and within a reasonable distance to their worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Review and evaluate plan submittals for completeness and compliance with the International Building Codes and other applicable adopted codes and ordinances.
- Prepare detailed written correction reports, correspondence and recommendations.
- Approve applications for permit issuance.
- Perform non-structural review of residential and commercial buildings for fire and life safety, energy conservation and mechanical systems.
- Perform structural review of residential buildings including but not limited to wind, gravity and earthquake resistance of wood, concrete, and steel building systems.
- Interpret, apply and explain codes and regulations; resolve issues that arise due to code or structural design and coordinate plan corrections.
- Maintain knowledge of various changes in construction codes that result from technological changes, material changes or legislative mandate.
- Meet with applicants, architects, contractors, and/or the public to clarify code requirements, and respond to inquiries via telephone and email as necessary.
- Provide advice to inspectors on field-related concerns.
- Examine geotechnical and structural reports and calculations to verify adequacy of structural designs of residential construction based on generally accepted construction principles.
- Maintain files associated with plan review process and permits.
- Contribute to an environment of teamwork and respect.
- Foster a culture of equity and inclusion by recognizing the diverse needs and perspectives of groups and individuals.
- Remain current with relevant technological advancements as it relates to field.
- Participate in and help provide cross-training in processes as directed by management to ensure a well-rounded team for coverage purposes.
- Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- May be assigned to support City priorities during emergencies.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Construction Management, Civil Engineering or a related field.
- Minimum 2 years of building inspection and plan examination experience.
- Or minimum 6 years of relevant education and experience.
- International Code Council (ICC) Certification as a Building Plans Examiner, or ability to obtain certification within 12 months of hire.
- Valid Driver's License.
- Successful passing of a required background check and driving record check.

- Drive to offsite locations to perform essential functions.
- Move throughout City facilities and buildings.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Work is performed in an office environment and outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Exposure to high voltage wires, hazardous materials, heights, and noise from equipment on job sites.
- Noise level out in the field is moderately loud and noise level in the office is moderately quiet.
