We are looking for an entry level, relatively inexperienced apprentice that is looking to build a career. In this role, you will be learning all aspects of construction, maintenance and testing of the equipment in the electric substation systems 12KV through 230KV. All work in the substation is performed on de-energized equipment under the direction of a journeyman electrician.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Some experience related to construction work, preferred: substation/utility work a plus
  • Must possess a current and valid Florida Driver's License
  • Class A CDL (preferred)
  • Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) clearance, or ability to acquire within six (6) months of hire

Salary Range: Starting at $26.55 per hour (Estimated $55,224.00 annually) with a structured step progression system and performance-based pay increases every 6 months up to $28.20 per hour (Estimated $58,656.00 annually)

Job Purpose:

This is an entry level, relatively inexperienced apprentice position in a craft area job ladder. This employee will be learning all aspects of construction, maintenance and testing of all the equipment in the electric substation systems 12kV through 230kv. All work in the substation is performed on de-energized equipment under the direction of a journeyman electrician.

Primary Functions:

  • Participate in on the job training, in-house training seminars, online electrical training courses, which consists of most facets of the electrical substation section; this training will include, but is not limited to, in field equipment maintenance and testing as designated by the supervisor;
  • Participate in classroom studies, visual and audio programs, practical applications and other exercises as designated by the supervisor;
  • Prepare materials and equipment to be used in the testing and maintenance of substation equipment.
  • Assist in maintenance of transformer LTCs, 12kV to 230kV breakers and the testing of all equipment in the substation from 12kV to 230kV.
  • Participate in the installation of new equipment to include transformers, breakers, CCVTs, PTs and arresters.
  • Operate all manner of bucket trucks, boom trucks, line trucks, hydraulic equipment and mechanical tools/devices associated with utility substation work;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Technical Requirements:

  • Familiarity with, but not limited to, the following:
  • Knowledge of: mathematics to include graphic arithmetic, principles of mechanical concepts, reading comprehension
  • Use of basic electrical and mechanical hand tools. (preferred)
  • Basic knowledge of an electrical multimeter. (preferred)
  • Good mechanical aptitude
  • Basic electrical or mechanical knowledge (preferred);
  • Use of the following equipment: (preferred)

* Trucks (e.g. bucket trucks, line trucks)

* Hydraulic equipment

* Mechanical tools/devices associated with substation work

* Forklift

  • Abilities to include:
  • Building relationships with co-workers and customers;
  • Taking direction and demonstrating an eagerness to learn.
  • Able to retain information
  • Basic computer skills
  • Wear and use various safety equipment (breathing apparatus, etc.)

Education/ Certification/ Years of Experience Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED;
  • Some experience related to construction work, preferred; substation/utility work is a plus

Working Conditions:

This job involves working at heights (upwards of 150 ft) and confined areas. This job involves frequent exposure to extreme weather conditions and insects. This job may involve occasional exposure to noxious fumes and excessive noise. Employees are expected to work overtime and respond to call out for work, occasionally on very short notice, at all hours, on weekends/holidays and in all manner of inclement weather.

Physical Requirements:

This job consists of very frequent standing, lifting up to twenty (20) lbs, bending/stooping, speaking, and hearing. Working at elevated heights (upwards of 100 ft) and working for extended periods in confined space areas. This job consists of frequent walking, lifting up to forty (40) lbs, pushing, pulling, digging, kneeling and/or crawling. This job consists of occasional sitting, lifting over 50 (50+) lbs, and may involve occasional writing. This job will very frequently involve driving a company vehicle as assigned.
