The Supervising Detention Counselor l assists administration with the overall operations of the facility and performs related tasks as required. Responsible for the implementation and oversight of daily programming and scheduling. Coordinates and implements orientation, training, and supervision of Supervising Detention Counselors and all subordinate staff. Supervising Detention Counselors l may be assigned on a rotating shift basis and on alternating work schedules including weekends and holidays as needed. Primary responsibility involves overall program supervision, and at times functioning in the capacity of facility administrator. Performs related work as required.

Job Responsibilities



  • Supervises and schedules the work of detention staff, including supervising detention counselors, sr, detention counselors, detention counselor l and detention counselors.
  • Provides on the job training for new employees; conducts orientation sessions for staff and visitors; assists in the supervision of residents; supervises visitation programs between residents, family and court approved visitors.
  • Approves and supervises admissions and/or releases of residents and approves and monitors any resident needing isolation.
  • Responsible for the supervision and training of the rapid response team and insuring all critical incident reports are complete and submitted on time.
  • Develops plans and program activities as prescribed by medical, clinical, and administrative staff; attends case work planning meetings; maintains appropriate records, files and or logs; orders, distributes and inventories all necessary supplies used by residents.
  • Develops, coordinates and maintains daily shift schedules, school, special programs, court movements, medical appointments, et al, and other routine assignments to insure the adequate care and supervision of all residents.
  • Supervises overall safety and security procedures; conducts fire drills; completes necessarily follow up reports following emergency situations.
  • Ensures that residents are cared for in a safe, structured, secure environment.
  • Other related activities may be performed although not listed.


Job Requirements



  • Bachelors' degree in human services, plus four (4) years of full-time paid experience in an detention or residential setting working with youth and young adults aged 10-20; including at least two (2) years functioning in a supervisory capacity OR High school Diploma or equivalent six (8) years of full-time paid experience in an in detention or residential setting working with youth and young adults aged 10 - 20 including at least two (2) years functioning in a supervisory capacity.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule with variable hours including day, evening, weekend, holiday and subject to on call hours.
  • Require a valid driver's license and reliable vehicle. Travel is required. Ability to coordinate and plan travel for visits and appointments in an efficient manner.
  • Ability to work with an economically and culturally diverse population.
  • Skills: demonstrated communication skills, both oral and written, including attention to detail; capable of working in a stressful environment; ability to become TCI, First/Aid CPR certified.
