Job Summary:

The WCIC (https://cropinnovation.cals.wisc.edu/) is a World-Class plant research lab that is part of the UW, tucked away in the neighboring town of Middleton. The WCIC takes pride in helping academic, private, and philanthropic groups conduct plant research in several crops. The Center generates research material for graduate students, proof of concept material for start-ups, and produces plant material for food security gains in impoverished nations.

This position will have a lead role in advancing the novel transformation of new crops with morphogenic developmental genes to expedite the cultivar-independent transformation of new crops. Experience with transformation of multiple monocot and dicot species and morphogenic developmental genes is required to provide a starting point to conduct research for further improvement in this area. This position will generate reports and present updates to clients funding the research. Experience with crops that are clonally propagated, like Banana, Cassava, or Switchgrass is valuable in this position. Additionally, experience with Maize and Sorghum is valuable.


Responsibilities:
Identifies research problems, designs research methodologies, performs research, and helps to prepare the results for presentation to professional organizations or for scholarly publications to help advance research.

  • 40% Assists with the identification of research problems and the development of research methodologies and procedures
  • 20% Collects and analyzes research data, conducts experiments and interviews, and documents results according to established policies and procedures under general supervision and limited responsibility
  • 10% Conducts literature reviews, prepares reports and materials, and disseminates information to appropriate entities
  • 10% Attends and assists with the facilitation of scholarly events and presentations in support of continued professional development and the dissemination of research information
  • 10% Writes or assists in developing grant applications and proposals to secure research funding
  • 10% Serves as a main point of contact and liaison with internal and external stakeholders providing information and representing the interests of a specialized research area

Education:

Required
PhD in plant breeding, plant biotechnology, genetics, or other closely related field


Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:
- 3 years of postdoctoral training with novel approaches to optimize plant transformation regeneration through the usage of morphogenic genes that regulate embryogenesis development
- 1 year of employment experience with project coordination and data reporting involving internal and external research collaborators

Preferred Qualifications:
- 2 years of employment experience with transformation of multiple monocot and dicot crops, e.g., bananas, cassava, switchgrass, sorghum or maize


Work Type:

Full Time: 100%

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Monday through Friday: 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM


Appointment Type, Duration:

Terminal, 24 month appointment.
This position has the possibility to be extended or converted to an ongoing appointment based on need and/or funding


Salary:

Minimum $70,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications
The anticipated salary range for this position is $70,000 - $80,000. However, final salary will depend on experience and qualifications. Employees in this position can expect to receive benefits such as generous vacation, holidays, and paid time off; competitive insurances and savings accounts; retirement benefits.
