Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer of Hackensack Meridian Health, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) is responsible for planning, organizing, leading and directing all of the following areas for the Hackensack Meridian Health: Acute Care Hospitals, Ambulatory sites, JVs, LTACH, Nursing, Children's and Specialty Hospitals, Network- wide Institutes/Service Lines, Patient Care Services and Facilities and Construction. The Chief Operating Officer (COO) will serve as the 'go-to' person with respect to all operational and management issues for Hospitals, Ambulatory sites, Institutes and Service Lines for Hackensack Meridian Health.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

General Functions:

  • Interprets, communicates, and assures the implementation of the organization's mission, vision and values.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of the organization's strategic plan, performance improvement program, human resources program, and annual operating budget, plans, goals, and objectives.
  • Develops and maintains written policies and procedures that govern operations.
  • Facilitates the direction of professional/leadership development and mentoring through detailed succession planning process.
  • Plans and directs the organization's programs and policies in accordance with federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations.
  • Works with the leadership of Hospitals, Network Service lines, Care Transformation and other departments to develop new programs and services for the organization. Ensures continuity and alignment of programming and services.
  • Recruits, hires, and manages high performing staff. Reviews the performance of direct reports.
  • Exemplifies HMH's values and acts as a role model for all standards of behavior and managerial competencies.

Essential Functions:

  • Designs and implements action plans to achieve the operating goals, objectives, policies, procedures and strategic mission of Hackensack Meridian Health.
  • In conjunction with the leaders of Hospitals, Network Service Lines and Care Transformation develops and implements clinical programs.
  • Works closely with leaders and physicians to ensure effective delivery of patient care.
  • Ensures appropriate staff are in place to deliver optimal levels of service.
  • Works with the leaders of the Hospitals,Network Service Lines and Care Transformation to create a culture that encourages quality, excellence, and superior results in-patient, physician, and employee satisfaction.
  • Collaboratively oversees and directs all Hackensack Meridian Health facilities and related construction activities with the Chief Growth Offer. Holds regular meetings to liaise with the leaders of Hospitals, Network Service Lines and Care Transformation under his/her responsibility.
  • Actively collaborates with ongoing operations in finance, information technology, human resources, facilities, materials management, strategic planning, and marketing.
  • Supports all hospital nursing operations by demonstrating a strong commitment to Magnet objectives.
  • Works with and supports hospital compliance teams and Clinical Units in preparation for the Joint Commission surveys.
  • Oversees the development and maintenance of data, analytics and reporting that assists in making decisions and monitoring progress across the organization.
  • Serves as a 'go-to' person with respect to operational and management issues for all Hospitals, Network service Lines and Care Transformation.
  • Provides effective, participatory leadership to the organization's strategic planning processes, including the development of measurable criteria to determine effectiveness of programs, plans, and policies.
  • Reviews, on an ongoing basis, the competitive marketplace. In accordance with the CEO of Hackensack Meridian Health, and the Chief Growth Officer to develop strategies and initiatives designed to solidify existing market position and to expand new opportunities.
  • Leads executive leadership in the development of short and long-term strategic plans, including the development of organizational objectives and strategies to achieve the approved strategic initiatives and to enhance competitive standing.
  • Evaluates and reports on the organization's progress in reaching planned objectives.
  • Monitors changes in policies and attitudes of regulators and agencies to assess potential impact on organizational goals.
  • Interacts and communicates with elected and other officials to further the organizational goals.
  • Works with medical leadership to develop and implement strategies, plans, and policies related to the organization's medical staff.
  • Maintains and manages relationships with key health planning related agencies and organizations.
  • Leads feasibility assessments for new programs and services and assesses the viability of existing services. Participates in the identification and analysis of potential mergers and/or acquisitions.
  • As necessary, selects and oversees consultants and contractors capable of assisting in program planning and design.
  • Expands programmatic relationships between the hospital and its referring base; leads the design and oversees the implementation of the resulting clinical initiatives.
  • Facilitates the implementation of the clinical components of education and research programs.
  • Promotes and reinforces a positive image of Hackensack Meridian Health in the New Jersey/New York metropolitan area.
  • Provides leadership to other leaders and assists in the accomplishment of departmental goals and objectives.
  • Leads the development and implementation of annual operating and capital budgets related to areas of responsibility.
  • Identifies opportunities for cost reduction and/or develops plans and programs to improve cost effectiveness.

Strategic Orientation: Demonstrates the ability to determine where a function or organization is going long-term and how it is going to get there as evidenced by: sorting through data and information and discerning pertinent facts, looking outside one's function, organization, and industry for ideas and strategies that will move our business forward and planning projects with complex details, setting realistic milestones, and incorporating upfront measures for success.

Qualifications

Education/Experience:

  • Master's degree required in healthcare administration or a related field (MA/MS/MBA/MHA/MPA).
  • 15 or more years of progressive experience in healthcare with management and leadership experience in healthcare with experience in strategic planning and implementation, clinical operations, hospital operations, finance, and annual operating and capital budgets.
  • Five or more years of healthcare experience in a large multi-site healthcare system with at least one academic medical center.
  • Track record of senior leadership experience at level of Network COO, Regional President or Hospital President of a large comprehensive nationally recognized academic medical center.
  • Able to work effectively in multiple areas within a complex, multi-faceted organization. Ability to interface effectively with colleagues, Board of Governors, staff at all levels of the organization, medical staff, patients and their family members, consultants, legislators, government officials, outside organizations, and the general public.
