The Systems Administrator position, reporting to the Director of IT Operations and the Systems Administrator Supervisor, is responsible for the implementation, configuration, maintenance, and performance of critical SQL Server systems. This role requires deep technical expertise in Microsoft SQL Server administration and database systems, as well as a proactive approach to optimizing and automating processes. The position involves ensuring the availability, consistent performance, security, and scalability of web applications and systems, while independently managing moderately complex database services and configurations. The Systems Administrator will collaborate closely with SVM-IT Sysadmins and developer staff to resolve system issues and assist in database design, backup and recovery planning, and maintaining security standards.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position
* Bachelors degree in a related area of Information Technology or equivalent years of experience and/or training in Information Technology.
* Minimum of 5 years in Database Administration or equivalent
* Experience with Windows Server and Active Directory, including security policies and permissions related to database environments. Working knowledge with SQL Server Always On, clustering, replication, and other high-availability solutions.
* Proven expertise in MS SQL Server database administration, including independent installation, configuration, optimization, and upgrading of SQL Server databases and related products in accordance to industry best practices. Expertise in database tuning, optimization, and troubleshooting to ensure high levels of performance, availability, and security. Working knowledge of Ola Hallengren's Maintenance Scripts.
* Demonstrated ability to independently design and implement database backup, recovery, and disaster recovery strategies for complex systems while ensuring alignment with best practices and organizational requirements. Strong knowledge of T-SQL and experience with stored procedures, triggers, functions, configuring linked servers (particularly to Oracle DBs), scheduled jobs, encrypted connections.
* Familiarity with monitoring tools and methodologies to proactively ensure performance optimization and availability of databases. Experience in designing and implementing database security controls to comply with regulatory standards, security policies, and best practices.
* Applies advanced systems concepts in managing Active Directory services, including troubleshooting AD forests, domains, and trusts, user and group administration, Group Policy management, DFS file share services, DNS/DHCP configuration, PKI infrastructure, Intune custom profiles and experience with domain migration and consolidation.
* Applies advanced systems concepts in administering and optimizing complex Windows Server environments, including experience with Windows Server 2016/2019/2022. Demonstrated advanced knowledge of security principles and practices, with experience in securing Windows servers, Active Directory, and cloud-based environments against emerging threats.
Preferred Qualifications
* Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate
* Experience performing network administration in complex switched and routed IP network topologies.-Experience in a veterinarian health care related system and/or knowledge of the VMTH's VMACS system.
* Knowledge of cloud-based database services (e.g., Azure SQL Database or AWS RDS). Familiarity with other database technologies such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, or Oracle. Advanced experience with database automation and DevOps tools such as Jenkins, PowerShell, or other scripting languages, including the ability to design and execute automation workflows for database administration tasks. Experience in database migration, including on-premise to cloud migrations.
* Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex database issues. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to diverse stakeholders, including senior management and cross-functional teams, while providing strategic guidance and end-user support. Familiarity with ITIL best practices in service management and knowledge of security assessment principles and compliance with industry standards such as GDPR, PCI-DSS, or HIPAA.

SVM-IT is a matrix organization consisting of the three main functions of IT Operations, Application Development and Project Management. SVM-IT provides services to the faculty, students, staff and affiliates of both the School of Veterinary Medicine, the California Animal Health and Food Safety Lab System (CAHFS), and the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH).
