S&ME is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic CEI Roadway Inspector to become part of our Service Line team in Columbia, South Carolina. Join S&ME today and help us provide engineering solutions to our clients!

What You Will Do:

As a CEI Inspector, you will be essential in supervising, managing, and inspecting transportation projects, such as roadways, bridges, railways, pedestrian paths, ports, and aviation facilities. Your main duty will be to ensure that contractors adhere to all contract requirements, plans, and specifications. This role involves both indoor and outdoor tasks, exposing you to various weather conditions and field settings. Flexibility is crucial, as the position may require extended hours, including weekends and holidays.



  • Oversee contractor tasks such as grading, paving, bridge building, and traffic management, ensuring all activities align with project specifications and permits.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation, including daily logs, material reports, and field books, to support contractor payments and project tracking.
  • Collect material samples, confirm line and grade using survey tools, and conduct essential calculations to ensure construction accuracy.
  • Carry out DBE and EEO compliance checks and confirm that erosion control measures comply with environmental and permit regulations.
  • Participate in meetings, collaborate with external construction teams, and provide updates to senior technical staff during project evaluations.


Pay rate is based on the level of experience. Additional incentives are available for existing applicable certifications.

Who You Are:



  • You have a High school diploma/GED
  • You have 2 or more years of highway-related construction or inspection experience or a 2-year technical degree in Civil Engineering Technology or Surveying Technology or higher with 2+ years of highway-related construction or experience
  • You have the ability to supervise crew and/or a separate program function of moderate complexity
  • You have one or more SCDOT-based certifications
  • You have experience with SCDOT resurfacing projects including pavement markings, a plus
  • You have American Concrete Institute (ACI) Certification, or other materials certifications, a plus



Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

You are willing and able to perform the physical demands of this position with the use of Company-provided Personal Protective Equipment such as:



  • Working outdoors the majority of the time in varying weather conditions
  • Walking over rough, uneven terrain and standing for potentially up to 12 hours a day
  • Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs, (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
  • Maneuvering field equipment safely, such as a loaded wheelbarrow, on uneven ground around active construction sites
