Mission Contribution: The Lead Coach is results-driven and supports the mission of the Excel Center by enhancing student performance, retention, recruitment, and post-secondary outcomes. This role fosters a supportive environment for life coaches and students, utilizing data-driven strategies and collaborative leadership to ensure educational and personal success. The Lead Coach plays a key role in shaping academic planning models that drive student achievement and readiness for postsecondary success.

Summary: The Lead Coach is performance-driven and leads the development, implementation, and assessment of the Excel Center's academic planning model. This includes overseeing student performance, retention, recruitment, and post-secondary outcomes. The Lead Coach manages and supports a team of life coaches, provides training and evaluations, and ensures alignment with Indiana Academic Standards. This role is integral to guiding staff professional development and establishing procedures for student success tracking.

Essential Functions:


  1. Monitor student enrollment and balance caseloads among life coaches, facilitating action planning to address caseload concerns and withdrawals.
  2. Ensure students attend regular coaching sessions and receive ongoing academic and career support.
  3. Conduct regular one-on-one coaching sessions to guide students through their academic and career pathways.
  4. Track and support student progress, assisting with re-enrollment efforts for those who have not completed courses.
  5. Foster a high-performance culture among staff and students, promoting engagement, accountability, and commitment to success.
  6. Establish systems for tracking and evaluating student academic progress, ensuring effective monitoring and timely interventions.
  7. Analyze relevant data to set improvement and achievement goals, providing targeted evaluations and feedback to staff and students.
  8. Maintain accurate and timely documentation of student progress, coaching sessions, evaluations, and intervention plans.
  9. Develop and communicate schedules for the life coach evaluation process, ensuring alignment with performance expectations.
  10. Partner with the school director to support school-wide goals related to graduation rates, enrollment, academic achievement, and student retention.
  11. Maintain compliance with school policies and procedures, ensuring documentation accuracy and adherence to performance expectations.
  12. Serve as a coach leader, guiding and supporting team members to achieve their fullest potential.
  13. Conduct interviews, make hiring decisions, and assist with onboarding: Evaluate candidates, select the best fit for the team, support a seamless transition for new hires, and engage in recruitment opportunities to attract and retain top talent.
  14. Conduct regular performance reviews for team members, providing constructive feedback, setting goals for improvement, and fostering professional development
  15. Document and implement coaching/corrective actions: Identify performance issues, develop and execute improvement plans, ensure compliance with policies and procedures, and foster ongoing professional development to enhance overall team effectiveness.
  16. Ensure that all new staff are properly trained within established timelines.
  17. Ensure students are connected with resources and support systems that contribute to their well-being and success.
  18. Promote student success by fostering meaningful relationships and providing individualized academic and career guidance.
  19. Support students in achieving certifications, career readiness milestones, or post-secondary education opportunities.
  20. Gather and apply feedback to continuously improve coaching strategies and student support initiatives.
  21. Actively participate in professional development opportunities and collaborative initiatives to enhance instructional practices and contribute to school-wide improvement efforts.
  22. Attend training sessions, meetings, and company-related events as required.
  23. Perform other duties as assigned by management.
  24. Adhere to Goodwill and Excel Center policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:


  • Proficient in providing academic, career, college/certification access, and social-emotional mentoring or advising to high school-aged students, particularly in nontraditional or adult education settings.
  • Effective oral, written, visual, and non-verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey ideas clearly and provide constructive feedback in person, digitally, and in written formats.
  • Proficient in using G Suite, MS Office, and student information systems to support student engagement and administrative tasks.
  • Skilled in building positive, student-centered relationships that foster engagement, promote open discussions, and maintain professional boundaries.
  • Experienced in working with diverse populations, including individuals facing barriers to education, and tailoring support to meet varied needs.
  • Capable of developing and maintaining collaborative partnerships that facilitate resource sharing and support student success.
  • Adaptable to shifting priorities while maintaining productivity and a positive learning environment.
  • Skilled in analyzing and interpreting data to inform decision-making and develop actionable strategies for student success.
  • Knowledgeable of Virginia Standards of Learning and 21st Century Skills, ensuring alignment with educational expectations and best practices.

Required Certificates, Licenses, Registrations, Experience:


  • Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Human Relations, Social Work, Rehabilitation Counseling, Education, or a related field required; Master's degree preferred.
  • Valid Virginia Educator's License in Guidance or a related field, or eligibility to obtain certification preferred.
  • Experience providing academic and career counseling, mentoring, or advising in a high school or adult education setting.
  • Must be able to successfully complete any assigned Goodwill training within the required period of time upon employment.

Special Requirements:


  • Reliable transportation is required to commute to and from the center for scheduled shifts.
  • Open availability for all scheduled shifts, including weekends, evenings, and holidays, as needed to meet business demands.
  • Must provide a cell phone for specified work responsibilities, including the use of a phone-based application for authentication.
  • Must successfully complete a state background investigation and drug screen.
  • TB screening is a requirement for this position.

  • The noise level in the work environment is typically moderate and reflective of an active learning environment but may vary depending on activities or events.
