Summary

The Civil Engineering College Intern will support the Engineering Department by assisting with administrative tasks and contributing to specific projects or portions of broader assignments under the guidance and mentorship of experienced professional engineers. This role is designed to provide hands-on experience that complements academic learning, helping to bridge the transition from student to professional.

This internship opportunity may vary in duration, including time-specific internships, extended part-time positions, or a combination of both. The intern will participate in the Engineering Department Exposure Plan; and, during the summer months, exposure to various governmental functions within the City of Garland through the City's Student Ambassador Program may be an option. Flexible hours, schedules, and hybrid work arrangements (in-office and remote) may be available.

Pay Range: (Depending on qualifications and experience)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Assist in broader assignments related to private development plan review, capital improvement project management, and field engineering inspections.

  • Prepare pre-development meeting notes and attend meetings as needed.

  • Support the plan submittal intake and routing process.

  • Conduct project assessments, research, and analysis.

  • Assist in the review of civil engineering drawings and construction plans for compliance with published engineering codes and standards.

  • Research and verify land records, easements, and record drawings for accurate representation in construction plans.

  • Research and verify FEMA floodplain limits to identify potential encroachments and determine applicable permit requirements.

  • Draft written reports, communications, and correspondence on behalf of the Engineering Department.

  • Provide administrative support to the Engineering Department.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Candidates must be currently enrolled in a university program pursing a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or a related field, with plans to continue enrollment after the internship.

  • Must have completed at least 1 year of study in the applicable program. Computer aptitude is required.

Preferred Qualifications

Education/ Experience:

  • Experience or interest in one or more of the following areas: land development, hydrology and hydraulics, roadway design, stormwater systems, water and wastewater systems, construction management.

  • Familiarity with engineering software, such as: BlueBeam, ArcGIS, CAD, and HEC-RAS.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Basic understanding of the civil engineering construction plan process

  • General knowledge of site surveys and topographic maps Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications

  • Strong aptitude for learning and the ability to follow guidance and mentorship

  • Ability to work independently and manage tasks effectively

  • Strong multi-tasking skills
