Job Summary
SMSI is seeking A Fire Protection Specialist to work onsite at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in Los Alamos, NM. The candidate will assist in planning and coordinating one or more programs relating to: fire protection program surveillance, loss prevention, facility and programmatic surveillance, and site-wide fire alarm systems operations. This function represents a professional position and is primarily concerned with aspects related to fire protection; life safety; property loss prevention; inspection, testing, and maintenance of fire alarm and fire suppression systems; and tracking results of facility surveillance and ITM efforts.
Job Responsibilities



  • Monitoring facility and programmatic activities relating to fire protection, oversight and control of the Laboratory's impairment control system, review of authorization basis documents and fire hazards analyses.
  • Work with LANL management on a limited basis and represents the Laboratory when interacting with external organizations.
  • Help research information used in responding to Department of Energy, National Nuclear Security Administration, or Defense Nuclear Facility Safety Board inquiries.
  • Assure safety and security compliance and make safety and security an integral part of every task, including taking the necessary steps to stop work if continuing the job is unsafe or compromises security.
  • Serve as a responsible steward of the environment and participates in Laboratory recycling efforts.
  • Assist in developing, implementing, and monitoring Laboratory policies, and achievement of goals and timetables relating to the laboratory's fire protection program.
  • Assist in implementing and monitoring fire protection, loss prevention, life safety related organizational strategies, goals, and metrics.
  • Assist in representing the Laboratory to other DOE laboratories, enforcement agencies and community organizations.
  • Assists in researching information to respond to fire protection issues.
  • Help prepare information that is used to inform, educate, and influence laboratory managers and supervisors on fire protection, loss prevention, and life safety related regulations, laboratory policies and practices and institutional programs.
  • Respond to routine internal requests for information and/or documents relating to fire protection related issues and inquiries.
  • Help research information used in responding to inquiries from external agencies such as the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), the Inspector General (IG), Department of Energy (DOE), and/or Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board (DNFSB).
  • Conduct simple and straightforward workforce or other analyses and prepares options/recommendations for management consideration.
  • Assist in developing Laboratory impairment reports, DNFSB and NNSA responses, fire hazards analyses, authorization basis documents or other studies.
  • Assist in developing fire protection, loss prevention, and life safety performance goals, objectives, and metrics for the institution.
  • Adhere to policies and programs concerning fire protection and loss prevention.
  • Research, assemble, and/or evaluate information or data regarding industry practices or applicable regulatory changes affecting fire protection policies or programs; recommend sound, practical solutions to relatively simple issues.

Required Skills/Abilities



  • Candidate should have a minimum of 4-5 years of related experience with fire protection and safety.
  • Awareness of applicable federal worker safety and health laws, regulations, and executive orders, and DOE orders related to fire protection and loss prevention.
  • Knowledge of the Laboratory's fire protection policies, practices and procedures.
  • Understanding of employee information systems and computer programs (i.e., Oracle, Data Warehouse, HAAS, CFAST etc).
  • Good analytical skills with ability to identify and resolve routine problems and make recommendations to management.
  • Working knowledge of conducting research, investigating alternatives, and recommending solutions to problems affecting fire protection program administration.
  • Understanding of basic elements fire protection and loss prevention programs and/or policies.
  • Experience in the preparation and presentation of oral and written reports.
  • Candidate must be a US citizen.
  • Candidate must have the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE "Q" security clearance.



Educational Requirements



  • Bachelor's degree preferred. In lieu of a bachelor's degree, equivalent experience / certifications and training will be considered: an associate's degree with an additional 2 years of experience.
