Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) Nuclear Science Division has an opening for a Senior Scientific Engineering Associate to join the Applied Nuclear Physics Program (ANP).

In this exciting role, you will support research and development in the areas of signal processing and radiation image reconstruction. The Sr. SEA will apply technical concepts to solve a wide range of technical problems associated with radiation imaging and mapping for medical, nuclear safety, and nuclear non-proliferation applications.

What You Will Do:

  • Apply technical concepts to solve a wide range of challenging problems associated with signal processing and image reconstruction for radiation imaging.
  • Participate in the design of novel detector systems for gamma-ray imaging and mapping in nuclear nonproliferation and medical applications.
  • Thoroughly document work and provide regular updates to Principal Investigators.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Contribute to other group activities related to advanced radiation detection concepts.
  • Publish papers, reports, and proposals and make oral presentations of original work.
  • May supervise activities of non-exempt and exempt personnel.

What is Required:

  • Bachelor's degree, or equivalent knowledge in physics, nuclear engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field
  • Demonstrated expertise in the detection, imaging, and mapping of gamma radiation.
  • Familiarity with Compton, coded aperture, and proximity-based gamma-ray imaging.
  • Familiarity with advanced methods for gamma-ray spectral analysis, anomaly detection, and isotope identification.
  • Specific, demonstrated expertise in radiation image reconstruction.
  • Experience of signal processing, numerical optimization, or statistical analysis.
  • Experience with the development and management of software in a Linux ecosystem.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively with scientific investigators, administrators, management and technical staff.

  • Excellent organizational and planning skills to contribute to ANP goals and objectives.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Master's or PhD degree in physics, nuclear engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field.
  • Experience in simulation and modeling of radiation detection systems is desirable.
  • Demonstrated record of academic publications.

Notes:

  • This is a full time 1 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
  • This position is expected to pay $99,000.00-$136,152.00, which fits within the full salary range of $99,000.00-$167,100.00 for the N50.2. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, and aligned with the internal peer group.
  • As a condition of employment, the finalist will be required to disclose if they are subject to any final administrative or judicial decisions within the last seven years determining that they committed any misconduct, are currently being investigated for misconduct, left a position during an investigation for alleged misconduct, or have filed an appeal with a previous employer.
