Primary Purpose of Position |
The Extension Agent for Agriculture and Natural Resources (
ANR) will support small-scale and limited-resource farmers by providing expert consultations, education, and hands-on training to enhance productivity and income. This role focuses on developing and delivering research-based programs that address key agricultural, economic, and environmental challenges in the community.
Key Program Areas:
Commercial Vegetable & Fruit Production - Enhancing crop yield, quality, and marketability. High Tunnel Crop Production - Extending growing seasons and improving production efficiency. Beekeeping & Pollination - Supporting pollinator health and sustainable honey production. Harvesting, Handling & Marketing Fresh Produce - Improving post-harvest practices and market access. Agritourism & Alternative Crops - Expanding farm income through tourism and niche crops. Home & Community Gardening - Promoting sustainable gardening practices for individuals and groups.
The Extension Agent for
ANR will provide hands-on, research-based training and conduct farm demonstrations on best management practices, innovative technologies, and sustainable agricultural methods. Additionally, this role will collaborate with local organizations to expand outreach efforts, assess program needs, and engage the community through advisory committees and direct participant feedback. |

The Cooperative Extension Program at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University is an educational outreach organization within the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences.
Cooperative Extension at A&T provides researched-based educational information, programming and technical assistance to limited-resource audiences that address a diverse range of issues in four programmatic areas - Agriculture and Natural Resources, Family and Consumer Sciences, Community and Rural Development, and 4-H Youth Development.
Together with its partners - North Carolina State University Cooperative Extension Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, state and county governments, a dynamic and resourceful system is formed. In addition to campus operations, The Cooperative Extension Program has professionally staffed offices in almost half of the 100 counties in North Carolina and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.
The Stokes County Cooperative Extension Center delivers research-based educational programs to citizens of Stokes County. In addition to partnering with the state's two land grant universities, the center enjoys an excellent partnership with local government, relevant industries and community-based associations and organizations.
The center recognizes agriculture as a strong component of the local economy and supports the farmers' need to diversify their farming operations. County produce sustains three active farmers markets, a sweet potato alliance and a local food coalition. |
Minimum Requirements |
Bachelor's degree with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 overall or a 3.0 in the major field of study (based on a 4.0 scale), or completion of a Master's degree; a personal automobile and valid driver's license; computer literacy; strong oral and written communication skills; the ability to plan, implement, market, and evaluate educational programs; willingness to work as a team member and support a total Extension program; and the ability to handle multiple demands and set priorities. |
