About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking a Principal Architectural History Team Lead - West Region, fostering its growth and adherence to the highest standards of quality. This position will support our teams and projects in Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington. The Principal Team Lead is a core member of the Cultural Resources program and will collaborate with SWCA's managers, Directors, and Vice Presidents on technical and business development efforts throughout the West region, while collaborating with peers in SWCA's other regions (North; South). The ideal candidate will combine high-level technical expertise with commercial acumen, consulting knowledge, and leadership skills to continue to grow our architectural history practice across SWCA's West region. The Principal Team Lead will develop new business, manage large-scale projects, meet financial goals, and mentor others to do the same.

This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position with full benefits, bonuses and employee stock ownership. This position will be affiliated with one of our West offices and report to a cultural resources program director, and the successful candidate may work from an office on a full- or part-time basis or work from home. Travel within SWCA's West Region will be required, up to 10%.

What you will accomplish

Overall Responsibilities

  • Expand and grow the architectural history practice across strategic markets and client types throughout the West Region through training and mentorship, business development, and strategic hiring.
  • Lead the architectural history practice through direct and indirect means (influence) to be a highly effective, collaborative, client service-oriented element of the business.
  • Maintain and improve practice area QA/QC program and ensure effective implementation.
  • Identify technical development needs and priorities specific to the region and develop/facilitate trainings and mentorship programs to train staff.
  • Work collaboratively with the West leadership team, as well as architectural history teams across SWCA.
  • Manage key projects, act as Subject Matter Expert, and maintain annual productivity target of 65% or higher.
  • Contribute to national business development efforts in architectural history, historic preservation, and multidisciplinary efforts.
  • Support growth and performance initiatives. This includes strategic thought, marketing, and branding activities, pursuit tracking, and sales.
  • Drive geographic and market expansion by advising on potential key hires.
  • Drive compliance of safety policies and reporting requirements to ensure overall team safety.

Technical Accountabilities

  • Act as architectural history growth strategy leader for SWCA's West Region.
  • Be a technical authority and recognized leader in architectural history.
  • Serve as a Subject Matter Expert to other professionals in their field(s), acting as an advisor to internal and client teams.
  • Maintain productive relationships with regulators, industry experts, and agency staff.
  • Ensure implementation of stringent QA/QC to provide work of the highest quality and defensibility.

Client and Market Accountabilities

  • Identify, develop, manage, and grow key client relationships with a focus on, but not limited to, the West Region.
  • Act as an advocate for SWCA and clients in negotiating favorable contracts and resolving conflicts.
  • Manage risks and ensure consistency by being involved in the creation and review of proposals, contracts, and deliverables.
  • Manage opportunity-specific sales and pursuit teams, from opportunity identification and evaluation, through bid preparation and contracting.
  • Network within industry organizations to expand the regional client base in line with the region's strategic goals.
  • Develop a pipeline of teaming partners - both prime and sub - to meet pursuit goals.

Financial Accountabilities

  • Develop competitive pricing strategies and efficiencies that enable projects to meet or exceed SWCA's earnings targets.

People Accountabilities

  • Motivate and engage team members by creating a culture of collaboration, performance, celebrating and recognizing successes, and implementing strategies to attract, recruit, retain, motivate, and develop talent.
  • Direct supervision of staff within local working group (program).
  • Influence team culture and the work of others, even without formal authority, to ensure quality and consistency.

Experience and qualifications for success

  • Meets Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualifications Standards in Architectural History (36 CFR Part 61).
  • Working knowledge of federal cultural resource and historic preservation laws and practices, including NEPA, Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
  • Working knowledge of applicable state laws, regulations, and guidance in key West region states (e.g., California, Arizona, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Utah, Hawaii).
  • Minimum of twelve (12) years of experience conducting research, writing, and consulting in American architectural history with a consulting firm, agency, or other professional organization, including at least five (5) years as a project manager.
  • Demonstrated experience in supervising, mentoring, and providing leadership for other professionals.
  • Demonstrated business development success and consulting acumen, including success in leading and participating in proposal preparation, client interviews, and agency meetings.
  • Primary report authorship in a CRM context and experience providing quality control review of field documents, site forms, and reports.
  • Knowledge of the history and architectural history of the Western U.S.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with application of The Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation (36 CFR Part 67) and Historic American Buildings Survey/Historic American Engineering Record documentation and procedures are preferred.
  • Experience working on a variety of project types and sizes, on all project aspects (from pre-field tasks through final report preparation), in multiple regions, and with a variety of regulatory agencies.

An employee in this California based position can expect an annual salary of $113,279-$148,227. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
