The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, located on the George H. Cook Campus, is one of the largest schools of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. We pursue excellence in research, teaching, and outreach in areas of study that address the biological spectrum from molecules to ecosystems. Our emphasis is on both the fundamental sciences and the social and human dimensions. We offer 21 undergraduate majors, including plant and animal sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture and food systems, landscape architecture, food and nutritional sciences, ecology and evolution, marine science and oceanography, environmental sciences and meteorology, human ecology, entomology, and environmental economics.
In addition to instruction in the classroom, field, and laboratory, our students have opportunities for experiential learning on and off campus, including a growing emphasis on international experiences through short- and long-term study abroad. Students also have access to a robust program of applied research and outreach hosted by the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station laboratories, farms, business incubators, and marine stations throughout the state.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Farmer's Market Ambassador Assistant for the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. New Brunswick Community Farmers Markets ( NBCFM) hosts weekly farmers markets where community members gain access & resources to fresh and local produce, thus alleviating food insecurity and strengthening the local food system. NBCFM Market Ambassadors assist with a variety of ongoing programs for the farmers markets.

Among the key duties of the position are the following:

  • Works both indoor and outdoor settings to set up and break down the farmers market.
  • Assists customers with transactions, navigates the market, and connects to additional health and/or food related resources.
  • Provides excellent customer service and translation support in English, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, Russian, Korean, and/or any additional languages from the community.
  • Assists with bookkeeping and/or records management for Farmers Market operations.
  • Creates promotional materials via print, social media, and more to encourage participation at the markets.
  • Serves as liaisons between the NBCFM and local organizations and networks, including houses of worship, cultural centers, food pantries, and schools.
  • Assists with the collection of data from consumer surveys, transmit findings from the research team, and engage in outreach by delivering promotional presentations.
  • Additional tasks and responsibilities may be assigned dependent on the need of the program.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • High School diploma or equivalent, and/or up to 4 years of relevant office.
Certifications/Licenses
Preferred Qualifications

  • Fluent in spoken and written English and at least one other language (Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, Russian, and Korean).
  • Strong candidates will have relevant prior experience with at least one of the following: community nutrition, farmers markets, and/or food pantries; food safety, preparation, and service; customer service; marketing and/or website development; or community surveys/research.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must be reliable, punctual, and dependable with a friendly, personable, and outgoing disposition.
  • Eager to communicate in an engaging and respectful manner with diverse individuals.

Equipment Utilized
  • Computers, card reader machines.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Ability to lift at least 25 lbs.
Special Conditions

  • Willing and able to work flexible hours (including weekends and evenings).
  • Able to travel to locations throughout New Brunswick.
  • Must be able to work outside in all weather during May through early December.
