The Position

Under the direction of the immediate supervisor, this position performs skilled maintenance on automobiles, tractors, trucks, grounds equipment and other designated transportation vehicles and/or equipment. this position also provides assistance with the repair and troubleshooting of all buildings, equipment, and/or structures. This position carries out the responsibilities of this position in accordance with approved College policy and procedures and federal, local and College safety rules and regulations.

Staff Duration: Full Time 12 months


What You Will Do

1. Maintains and troubleshoots all College vehicles, grounds and building equipment, and/or structures in accordance with Manufacturers Original Equipment Manuel (OEM), safety guidelines related regulations and college policies

2. Performs general automotive duties, including but not limited to, engine tune ups, brake work and replacement, tire repairs; performs safety checks on vehicles and repairs/replaces worn parts as needed; maintains appropriate logs of vehicle checks, issues and repairs.

3. Disassembles and overhauls, differentials, starters, generators and other assembles requiring manual and physical dexterity, heavy lifting, and willingness to work in tight spaces and a variety of weather conditions.

4. Maintains an inventory of frequently needed engine and vehicle belts, plugs, etc., and follows proper protocol in the handling of hazardous waste materials, including proper storage, labeling use and storage.

5. Washes, cleans and maintains mileage logs on all college vehicles including fuel consumption/costs.

6. Provides guidance and oversight to designated workers or apprentices.

7. Performs assigned welding, plasma cutting, and fabrication duties.

8. Acquires and keeps current on all required trade certifications or licenses.

9. Responds and reports for duty in a timely manner in the event of an emergency or unusual conditions and provides assistance with essential maintenance needs or clean up tasks to restore or sustain regular college operations.

10. Related duties and projects as assigned.


The Successful Candidate Must Have

1. High School Diploma/GED; technical school certification may be substituted for two years of work experience.

2. Four years' of automotive repair experience that included the maintenance of commercial motor vehicles, tractors, trucks, building equipment and/or structures and lawn equipment.

3. One or more years or experience applying automotive repair principles to the maintenance of college vehicles and motorized equipment in a safe and efficient manner, and familiarity with trade and combustion engines terminology.

4. Experience with computer analysis automotive diagnostics equipment.

5. Valid NJ driver's license in good standing.


Even Better If You Have

1. Associate's Degree
2. Possession of ASE (Automotive Services Excellence) Certification first level
3. Trade school certification in an applicable area.
