Job Summary

This position supports Departmental purposes by providing skilled technical laboratory support to Transfusion Services in accordance with California Business and Professions Code Section 1269 and under the direct and constant supervision of a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS). Within this specialized field of Transfusion Services, the incumbent will perform a limited variety of specialized laboratory procedures and duties according to FDA and AABB regulations. This position utilizes a generalized theoretical background which directly supports patient care.

The Hospital Laboratory Technician performs scheduled maintenance and quality control processes on complex automated equipment and instruments, ensures timely and accurate specimen receipt and accessioning and prepares and/or processes various blood products. Oversees inventory forassigned department to include monitoring and ordering supplies. Supports the department by answering telephones, filing, and required recordkeeping. May provide laboratory technical instruction and training to new Clinical Laboratory Scientists, Residents, and CLS students.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Minimum 3 years' experience as an HLT I or equivalent in an accredited clinical laboratory
  • Knowledge of laboratory and transfusion medicine technical terminology.
  • Knowledge of computer systems such as EMR, LIS, email, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Possesses skills to communicate clearly and professionally, both verbally and in writing.
  • Strong multitasking skills to handle emergency situations consistent with a Level 1 Trauma Center

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least 2 years of experience and/or technical knowledge in Point of Care testing.
  • Knowledge of transfusion medicine basics including ABO, Rh, types of blood products, blood temperature requirements, component preparation, shipping requirements, etc.)
  • Knowledge of patients' special blood needs/requirements such as irradiation, CMV negative, washed, and antigen negative units.
  • Knowledge of blood acceptability criteria such as temperature, hemolysis, clots, fibrin and bacterial contamination.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work to meet established turnaround times, suspense dates and deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain composure and flexibility in an evolving environment.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team and to assist colleagues as needed.
  • Ability to use good judgement in handling situations not covered by written or verbal instructions.
  • Ability to recognize and resolve problems within scope of job duties and knowledge.
  • Ability to function and work in a diverse work environment.

The department is one of UCDMC's largest ancillary services with annual gross revenues of over $415M, expenses of approximately $65M, and more than 350 overall employees in the department's clinical and academic sections. Work Environment

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. Must be able to work variable shifts and overtime as needed and rotate weekends, holidays and "on call" hours to provide 24-hour coverage per departmental staffing policies. TB test required annually per JCAHO regulations. Must not consume food or drinks within laboratory except in designated areas. Must follow Standard Precautions, as well as all Hospital and Departmental Policies, including dress code policy. Must possess the ability to cope with exposure to patients and contaminated specimens. Must have a valid State of California Driver's License if operating University motor vehicles.
