The Environmental Health and Safety Manager reports directly to the Global Director of EHS with responsibilities focused on EHS/Safety oversight of seven lower risk sites. This position is responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring safety and environmental programs to ensure compliance with Federal / State Regulations and injury reduction and abatement initiatives.

Key Accountabilities

  • Near Miss, Incident, & Injury prevention and abatement with a continuous improvement mindset to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our people.

  • Lead and/or assist in the investigation process of any accidents, injuries, near misses, or occupational illnesses to determine contributing and root causes so as to develop corrective actions & preventative actions (CAPA's).

  • Responsible for company safety programs to ensure the safety and welfare of staff such as: Respiratory Protection, Blood Borne Pathogen, Lab Safety, Ergonomics and Hearing Conservation where applicable.

  • Oversee Safety Committee, medical surveillance program, regulatory compliance, safety training, facility safety inspections and test material safety evaluations and reviews.

  • Manage the environmental programs including ensuring that proper and current Federal and State permits, and licenses are maintained where applicable.

  • Design, plan, and implement procedures for the prevention, control, and remediation of health hazards.

  • Manage the hazardous waste program including advising how to classify all hazardous wastes, collection of hazardous wastes throughout the facility, storage of the hazardous wastes, and arranging for timely removal of the wastes from the facility with licensed waste disposal companies. Maintain all hazardous waste disposal records and maintain manifests, logs.

  • Oversee shipping and receiving of hazardous items for commerce by assuringall shipments are shipped in accordance with IATA and DOT regulations (via proper training of shipping and receiving department, etc.) as applicable.

  • Prepare required regulatory reports including OSHA 300/300A and EPA Biennial Waste if applicable.

  • Conduct regular in-house EHS inspections of the facilities, materials, and equipment in concordance with regulatory requirements and best practices.

  • Oversee safety requirements for study specific materials and procedures.

  • Work with the Attending Veterinarian and the IACUC to maintain industry expectations regarding worker safety in accordance with PHS and AWA requirements, and AAALAC best practices.

  • Responsible for Health and Safety aspects for the New Employee Orientation program,

  • Schedule new employee and annual refresher environmental, health and safety training

  • Maintain and update all emergency contact lists, emergency evacuation facility maps, safety posters, and schedule annual fire and other emergency scenario drills with local authorities.

  • Assist with regulatory inspections to represent EH&S programs.

  • Follow safety guidelines for handling materials with the use of protective equipment (PPE) as required.

  • All other duties assigned

Minimum Requirements

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, environmental science, biology, chemistry, animal science, industrial hygiene, or related field,

  • 3+ years of related experience in environmental, health & safety.

Critical Success Factors

  • Knowledge of Federal and State safety and environmental and safety regulations,

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with laboratory and feed mill personnel, facilities (maintenance), and management to provide solutions to complex problems.

  • Strong presentation, communication, and root cause analysis skills.

  • Proficient use of PC-based application (MS Office, on-line training software, EPA and OSHA regulatory packages as applicable).

  • Ability to travel up to 25% initially, actual required travel is around 15%.

  • Ability to read and interpret materials, verbally communicate, and be a careful listener.

  • Ability to shower into bio-secure facilities

  • Able to wear PPE such as mask, gloves, uniforms, bouffant cap as needed

Preferences

  • Experience working in a lab environment.

Physical Demands:

  • While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, bend/stoop.
  • The employee is required to walk, reach above, use hands for pushing/pulling and fine manipulation. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Working Environment

  • While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee could be exposed to fluctuations in air temperature caused by refrigerator/washing equipment, and/or outside weather conditions prevalent at the time. Live animals are present at the facility, The stress level in this position is considered mild to moderate.

*This position could be offered at different levels for candidates who qualify with a combination of advanced levels of education and/or years of experience. The salary range will adjust along with the level of the role to match the person's relevant experience and/or education level.
