Psychiatric Technician - Transporter

Behavioral Health Services

Hourly Pay Range: $15.07 - $21.96

Job Summary: The Psychiatric Technician Transporter performs an essential service to Milwaukee County by providing involuntary clients transportation to various destinations including hospitals and mental health court clients in the inpatient hospital setting. Technicians will be required to de-escalate agitated clients, problem solve, and provide needed client care during transport while communicating with their supervisor and dispatcher regarding in-route transport.

Job Duties:



  • Perform a variety of hands-on care including assisting patients with ADLs/IADLs, admissions, discharges, and transfers of patients.
  • Perform documentation of transport events, status of vehicle, and mileage. Document any billable DHS 34 services in the electronic health record as required.
  • Report to the supervisor any difficulties with transports. Complete the hand off of clients to other providers such as group home staff, hospital staff, and court.
  • Provide personal assistance, ambulation, and prevent elopement through use of therapeutic interventions and communication skills.
  • Ensure vehicle is cleaned after each use, reviewing outside of vehicle before and after transport to ensure no damage has occurred. Fill the vehicle with gas at fleet maintenance as needed.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.



Required Qualifications:



  • Be a current resident of the State of Wisconsin.
  • Hold an active Wisconsin Driver's License which will be maintained throughout employment.
  • Possession of a High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
  • Be certified as a Nursing Assistant (CNA) in Wisconsin at the time of application; must be active and in good standing without past or pending actions on the Wisconsin's Nurse Aide Registry.
  • At least one (1) year of experience in acute care at a psychiatric hospital as a Certified Nursing Assistant or Psychiatric Technician.
  • At least one (1) year of experience with clients who experience mental health issues, de-escalation of crisis situations, and managing conflicts.
  • Basic knowledge of all related computer and software applications, such as word processing and spreadsheets.
  • Intermediate knowledge of cell phones and GPS.


  • Received Vistelar or similar conflict management training.
  • Willing to get CPR certified within six (6) months of hire if not already.
  • Able to lift/carry up to 25lbs and push/pull up to 250lbs.
  • Willing to travel 75% of the time.
  • Able to work any shift including nights, weekends, and holidays as required.



NOTE: This original application is open to permanent residents of the state of Wisconsin at the time of application. In accordance with Section 11, Rule 3 of the Civil Service Rules a non-competitive examination will be held for this position. The non-competitive examination will consist of criteria deemed appropriate by the Director of Human Resources.
