The Roads and Grounds unit of the Division of Facilities and Services at West Virginia University is accepting applications for a Trades Specialist I (Mechanic).

About the Opportunity:

Under the supervision of the Supervisor, will perform maintenance and repair on various types of mowing equipment, snow removal equipment, grounds equipment, trucks, specialty equipment, etc.

What you'll do:



  • Performs preventive maintenance on all equipment involving daily and/or weekly inspections.
  • Shall initiate the investigation of repair methods, parts availability and cost, and develop necessary paperwork per shop policy and procedures for the replacement parts.
  • Repairs and rebuilds hydraulic pumps and motors, hydrostatic transmissions as backhoes, tractors, end loaders, graders, pick-up trucks, dump trucks, and other roads and grounds equipment.
  • Initiates, upon need, the sharpening of rotary and reel type mowers; includes necessary grinding and back-lapping for continual operation of all mowers.
  • Provides direction to Roads & Grounds Workers and Landscape Construction Workers for the proper preventive maintenance of all equipment including such things as oil, fuel, belts, tires, batteries, brake adjustments, reel adjustments, greasing, et. required on a daily basis for all roads and grounds equipment.
  • Provides overhauls and/or repairs, consisting of part replacement to major engine rebuilds on gasoline and diesel engines. This includes all types of carbureted, fuel injected, and turbo charged engines.
  • Overhauls and rebuilds final drive systems including transmissions, differential power take-offs, and hydraulic pumps on all roads and grounds equipment ranging from small lawn tractors to large diesel road graders, front end loaders, and backhoes.
  • Replaces defective chassis parts including such things as shock absorbers, tie rod ends, ball joint suspension, brake shoes, wheel bearings, king pins, springs, and spindles. Provides necessary wheel alignments as required upon completion of chassis part replacement.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs electrical systems ranging from magneto-type ignition systems to computer controlled electronic ignition systems including the replacement of wiring harnesses; troubleshoot and repair alternator and generator type charging systems.
  • Assists Landscape Construction Workers on landscape projects.
  • Assist with snow removal as required
  • Uses and is responsible for all shop equipment including lifts, cranes, oxygen and acetylene torches, welding equipment, hydraulic presses, reel grinding machine, pneumatic equipment, metal lathe, etc.


Pay Grade: 13

Hours: 6 am - 2 pm

Qualifications

    • High school diploma or GED.
    • A minimum of two (2) years mechanical experience in maintaining and repairing ground equipment, large construction equipment, and trucks of all sizes.
    • Must have one of the following:

      • 2 years experience in general trades building maintenance experience in the areas of basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, or other craft trades
      • Completion of an associate degree in building maintenance or other craft trade.
      • Completion of a 2-year accredited vocational craft trades program.


    • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
    • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.

    • Demonstrated ability to operate all types of grounds equipment.
    • Must have evidence of good general health.
    • Ability to perform mathematical computations.
    • Ability to climb heights over ten feet.
    • Ability to work in inclement weather conditions.
    • Ability to work with people in a stressful environment.
    • Ability to have excellent hand to eye coordination.
    • Ability to hear and interpret sounds in work area and verbal instructions.
    • Ability to work in extreme hot or cold weather conditions.
    • Ability to use logical problem-solving techniques.
    • Ability to communicate well utilizing both written and oral instructions.
    • Ability to work in uncomfortable positions as may be required by job assignment.
    • Ability to work with multi-craft personnel.
    • Hold a current Vehicle Driver's License.
    • Ability to lift 75 pounds or awkward objects.
    • Ability to wear a respirator.
    • Demonstrated ability to maintain proper attendance and punctuality standards.
    • Demonstrated ability to maintain average or above work standards.


    Physical Demands & Physical Coordination:



    • General good stamina required. Extremely strenuous, with frequent physical exertion such as lifting of very heavy items (more than 75 pounds), deep bending, climbing, and/or working in difficult or cramped positions for long periods of time. Daily:
    • Long periods of standing / carrying
    • Bending
    • Stooping
    • Climbing
    • Walking extreme distances
    • Lifting 75 pounds or greater (As needed)


    Requirements

    • Valid Driver's License
    • This position falls under the Department of Transportation and requires drug testing.
