Job Summary

The Medical Director of Dialysis Services is responsible for overseeing the clinical care delivery of all patients with end stage renal disease on dialysis in Cook County Health (CCH) Dialysis unit(s) which include John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital, Provident Hospital and/or other assigned CCH facilities and Home-Based Services (Peritoneal and Hemodialysis ensuring that patients receive the highest quality care in compliance with all regulatory and professional standards. The Medical Director will develop the strategic plans in alignment with organizational initiatives to deliver Hemodialysis (HD) and Peritoneal Dialysis (PD). The physician provides subspecialty-level consultative and direct care to a wide array of adult patients with complex medical problems confirmed or suspected to be caused or complicated by renal diseases. Renal physicians also further the educational mission of the CCH by directly teaching trainee supervisees and through continuous scholarship and regular participation in hospital-based, regional and national conferences; and they actively participate in systematic efforts to improve patient care and medical training through administrative leadership and active participation in multidisciplinary quality improvement activities.

General Administrative Responsibilities

Collective Bargaining



  • Review applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements and consult with Labor Relations to generate management proposals
  • Participate in collective bargaining negotiations, caucus discussions and working meetings


Discipline



  • Document, recommend and effectuate discipline at all levels
  • Work closely with labor relations and/or labor counsel to effectuate and enforce applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements
  • Initiate, authorize and complete disciplinary action pursuant to CCH system rules, policies, procedures and provision of applicable collective bargaining agreements


Supervision



  • Direct and effectuate CCH management policies and practices
  • Access and proficiently navigate CCH records system to obtain and review information necessary to execute provisions of applicable collective bargaining agreements


Management



  • Contribute to the management of CCH staff and CCH' systemic development and success
  • Discuss and develop CCH system policies and procedures
  • Consistently use independent judgment to identify operational staffing issues and needs and perform the following functions as necessary; hire, transfer, suspend, layoff, recall, promote, discharge, assign, direct or discipline employees pursuant to applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements
  • Work with Labor Relations to discern past practice when necessary


Typical Duties



  • Provides direct oversight of care delivery of all patients with end stage renal disease on dialysis for inpatient and outpatient dialysis services across CCH including home based-dialysis services-hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.
  • Monitors compliance with dialysis policies and procedures and achieving dialysis quality metrics and outcomes of the dialysis programs (Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis) across CCH, including home-based services.
  • Maintains an active clinical load of at least 70%.
  • Provides direct administrative oversight of all dialysis operations including water maintenance system in collaboration with nursing and building and grounds administrative leadership.
  • Develops and manages standard protocols, policies, and procedures designed to ensure effective operations and continued accreditation of the dialysis unit.
  • Drives continuous quality improvement initiatives and conducts monthly multi-disciplinary
  • quality assurance and improvement meetings to maintain standards of care and achieve clinical quality metrics as recommended by regulatory agencies.
  • Participates in the recruitment, orientation and performance evaluation of nephrologists, dialysis clinical staff and other non-clinical dialysis key staff including dialysis water maintenance staff.
  • Maintains current knowledge of changing regulations, policies and best practices within dialysis field.
  • Leads audits, inspections, and assessments of dialysis operations to ensure adherence to clinical and regulatory standards.
  • Evaluates new dialysis technologies and therapies, providing recommendations for adoption or integration into clinical practice as appropriate.
  • Provides renal consultative care to adult inpatients with complex surgical, obstetric, medical and/or critical care illnesses caused or complicated by confirmed or suspected renal diseases by regularly staffing hospital-based renal consult services according to the service schedule established by the Chair of the Division of Renal Disease (Nephrology).
  • Foster a positive work environment through mentorship and support, encouraging professional growth and development within dialysis team. Serves a resource for staff to ensure adherence to internal and external regulatory requirements.
  • Provides oversight, education and medical supervision to medical students, residents and renal fellows assigned to these services, including leading daily bedside rounds; conducting didactic teaching sessions; observing and providing informal and formal structured evaluations of trainee performance; completing and discussing structured performance evaluations with trainees in, a timely fashion, and case presentations and/or discussions during regularly scheduled case conferences.
  • Conducts regular teaching conferences for medical students, medical residents and/or renal fellows on core renal topics, as assigned.
  • Regularly attends and participates as a presenter or discussant in weekly case and didactic conferences, including weekly Grand Rounds conferences organized by the Department of Medicine.
  • Serves as a role model in consistently providing effective and compassionate patient care; adhering to policies; and manifesting respectful and professional behavior, scholarly inquiry and commitment to self- and institutional improvement.
  • Regularly attends and participates in divisional and departmental administrative meetings.
  • Participates in or lead structured quality improvement activities related to the hospital function, as assigned.
  • Contributes regularly to the design, performance, analysis and presentation of renal related research, including applications for intra- and extramural grant funding and for approval by applicable institutional review boards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Reporting Relationship

Reports to the Chair of the Division of Renal Disease (Nephrology).

Minimum Qualifications



  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical college or university
  • Licensed as a Physician and Surgeon in the State of Illinois prior to starting employment
  • Must be cleared for privileges by Medical Staff Services by start of employment
  • Board Certification in Nephrology
  • Three (3) years of experience as an attending physician practicing in Nephrology
  • Two (2) years of experience caring for Dialysis patients
  • Proficient in using standard word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation and statistical software.
  • Must be willing and able to travel efficiently to all areas on the campus of John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital, Provident Hospital and/or other assigned CCH facilities, and to travel efficiently between hospital and ambulatory sites as needed
  • Must be available to work on those evenings, weekends and holidays necessary to staff inpatient services or ambulatory sites as outlined above


Preferred Qualifications



  • One (1) year of experience as Medical Director of dialysis

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills necessary to communicate with all levels of staff and a patient population composed of diverse cultures and age groups

This position is functioning within a healthcare environment. The incumbent is responsible for adherence to all hospital and department specific safety requirements.
