HJF is seeking a Scientist II to develop and supervise research projects. Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products and problems. Develops new technologies and protocols.

This position will be in support of the Department of Anatomy, Physiology, and Genetics at Uniformed Services University (USU) in Bethesda, MD. The incumbent will be responsible for initiating and carrying out research projects in collaboration with a team and to work on assessments and treatments for traumatic brain injury in both lissencephaly and hydrocephalic animal models. A number of experimental scenarios are available including changes in brain gene/protein expression, neuropathology/histology. multiple types of imaging (PET, MRI), biochemical and behavioral analysis.

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. Responsibilities

  • Conduct advance research, such as studying the mechanism of protein interaction related to neurodevelopmental conditions. Must be able to design and analyze experiments using molecular biology, genome engineering, and other techniques.
  • Plans, executes, and oversees laboratory research. Formulates experimental hypotheses and designs experimental protocols.
  • Monitors scientific literature. Prepares written reports and manuscripts for submission to scientific journals and prepares patent applications.
  • Coordinates and prepares new grant and funding applications.
  • Processes and interprets experimental data.
  • Makes scientific observations, maintains detailed workbooks/documentation, and ensures documentation fulfills generally accepted professional/industry standards.
  • Performs immunohistochemistry on mammalian brain, Image J software, and GraphPad Prism.
  • Performs microscope analyses for anatomical data.
  • Write protocols and able to conduct and analyze behavioral experiments to show changes in cognition, memory, socialization, and/or sleep.
  • Collaborates with other technical and professional staff. Trains and supervises technical staff.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Doctoral Degree required.
  • Minimum of 5-8 years' experience required.

Required Knowledge and Skills and/or Abilities

  • Expert knowledge of Image J software and GraphPad Prism
  • Expert skills in microscopy using Neurolucida software (MBD Bioscience)
  • Knowledge of Optogenetic in both in vivo and ex vivo
  • Intermediate skills in conducting enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)
  • Intermediate skills in immunohistochemistry and immuneflorescence
  • Ability in small mammal stereotaxic surgery (viral and retrobead injection)
  • Ability in small mammal brain slices
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1/Public Trust background check

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.

Compensation

  • The annual salary range for this position is $88,600. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
