Description

The Clinical Lab Specialist is responsible for performing the daily functions of the laboratory including, but not limited to specimen processing, analyzing and reporting of specimen results to ensure quality of patient care. Operate clinical laboratory instruments utilized for testing and perform required daily preventive maintenance and quality control.

Salary range: $53.31/hr - $71.04/hr

Qualifications

Required:

  • Current California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license
  • Knowledge of all aspects of a medical laboratory
  • Possession of BLS from the American Heart Association and American Red Cross
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Clinical Laboratory Science or related degree
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and follow through for multiple patients on an ongoing basis
  • Minimum of two years recent experience and demonstrated technical competence performing hematology, chemistry, immunochemistry, and coagulation testing in a high volume setting
  • Working knowledge of lab safety and test methodologies used in chemistry, hematology, and urinalysis
  • Knowledge to recognize abnormal laboratory values and report to physicians
  • Skill in usage of medical diagnostic equipment as well as working knowledge of instruments and supplies required to perform necessary blood tests
  • Ability to accept direction from leadership and act promptly
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with patients, peers, physicians and administrators
  • Skill in listening perceptively, conveying awareness, and responding to patients and visitors with health concerns using tact and discretion
  • Ability to interact diplomatically and sympathetically with patients, their families, and general public in a high volume, clinical setting
  • Skill in performing tasks with frequent interruptions and/or distractions and instrument noise, including the ability to accept equivocal circumstances and respond to changing priorities and deadlines
  • Ability to follow proper channels of policies & procedures, communication & work standards
  • Ability to maintain equanimity in the face of resistance, indifference and hostility
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and to work with sensitive and confidential information using discretion and judgment
  • Knowledge of all safety requirements when handling biohazardous specimens or contaminated instruments
  • Ability to perform activities such as moving equipment for repair, transportation of reagents, blood products or supplies, pipetting, etc. as required
  • Ability to be punctual and maintain a satisfactory attendance record
  • Ability to work overtime in cases of emergency, to cover other shifts, or be flexible in work schedule based on operational needs

Preferred:

  • Minimum of two years of acute care/oncology/abnormal hematology outpatient experience
  • Working knowledge of the UCLA registration system, appointment scheduling system and order entry system
