Primary Purpose of Department
The mission of the Bioinformatics and Genomics Department is to develop novel computational approaches to important biological problems, and to provide training in the science that underlies them.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Department of Bioinformatics and Genomics seeks a Graduate Program Coordinator beginning immediately. The duties of the Graduate Program Coordinator are in four main areas:

  • Student recruitment - Travel to career and graduate fairs, undergraduate institutions, promote the program to UNC Charlotte undergraduates, and maintain an active social media presence for the department. Communication with prospective students. Monitor the departmental general email account.
  • Student advising - Meet each semester with MS and certificate students to advise on course selection and ensure that students maintain progress toward graduation.
  • Program administration - Manage annual course catalog and website updates, maintain student files, assist with management of program budget, coordinate with the MS and PhD program directors for program administration support. Liaison to the graduate student organization and aid in event planning for the department.
  • Assessment and reporting - Collect data on student recruitment, retention, graduation, and on alumni outcomes. Assist on reporting for SLO outcomes for graduate programs.

Summary of Position Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain contacts in undergraduate programs statewide and will travel to conferences and feeder institutions to recruit potential students for PhD and MS programs.
  • Act as primary academic advisor to MS, and certificate students and will assist PhD academic advisors in maintaining progress records.
  • Maintain admissions, enrollment, progress, and placement records for all graduate and undergraduate students and update course catalogs.
  • Administer the program's web, social networking presence, and marketing materials.
  • Assist the department chair in managing the program budget (SBTI funds).

Minimum Education/Experience
Masters in Higher Education Administration or a related discipline, or Masters in Bioinformatics, with 2 years experience in teaching, assessment and/or program administration.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience
The ideal candidate would combine knowledge of bioinformatics subject matter and life science industries with recent training or direct experience in higher education administration. Experience with academic information systems is needed and experience with effective use of social media is highly desirable.
