Job Summary:

The Hancock Agricultural Research Station is one of 12 UW-Madison research stations and is located in the central sands region. The station consists of approximately 452 acres with 320 of those acres being irrigated cropland with the primary focus on vegetable crops (potato, snap beans, sweet corn, carrots, dry beans, and cucumber) but also other agronomic crops (corn, soybean, and wheat). There are over 150 research projects annually at the station.

The person in this position will operate all types of farm equipment including specialized plot equipment, operate and maintain irrigation systems and related equipment, perform specialized research and general agriculture operations, maintain and repair vehicles and equipment while exercising initiative, troubleshooting/problem-solving, and thinking independently.


Responsibilities:
Operates basic or complex equipment, applies pesticides, and performs physical labor to maintain institutional agriculture in support of institutional goals.

  • 20% Operates, cleans, and repairs basic and complex agricultural machines and equipment to ensure safety and operable functionality and to adhere to established rules, policies, and regulations
  • 10% Applies pesticides in accordance with best practices and established rules, policies, and regulations
  • 20% Stages equipment and machines in preparation of agricultural activities
  • 20% Maintains organization of designated facilities and associated supplies, notifies appropriate entities of damaged materials or the need for supply replenishment
  • 10% Documents completion of duties according to established policies and procedures
  • 20% Operates, maintains, and repairs irrigation systems in a variety of landscapes.

Qualifications:

Required:
-Experience operating tractors and or other farm equipment for agronomic functions such as tillage, fertilizer application, planting/seeding, and crop harvest.
-Experience operating all-terrain vehicles, utility terrain vehicles, and pickup trucks for general farm use on and off road.

Preferred Qualifications:
-Experience performing basic maintenance and repairs on tractors, skid loaders, pick-up trucks, all terrain vehicles, and other farm equipment.
-Experience in proper set up, calibration, and making adjustments to farm equipment as required to meet research and field condition needs.
-Experience in proper operation and maintenance of irrigation systems and related equipment


Work Schedule:

8am - 4:30pm, Monday through Friday. Occasional nights and weekends may be required for this position.

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Salary:

Minimum $21.50 HOURLY
Depending on Qualifications
The anticipated hourly pay rate for this position is $21.50 - $25.00. However, final salary will depend on experience and qualifications. -Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions and lift 50 lbs repeatedly.
-This position will be 100% full-time for 9 months during the crop season and will be 50% part-time for approximately 3 months each year.
