OneMain is embarking on a critical initiative to build and scale industry-leading digital experiences for our customers across web and mobile platforms. We're seeking an Experience Design Director to lead the creation of innovative digital products that will impact millions of customers and drive the success of our digital strategy.

In this role, you'll lead and mentor cross-functional teams to deliver user-centered, high-quality designs. We're looking for a dynamic leader with strong expertise in design, communication, and people management. You will collaborate closely with engineering, UX research, content design, and other teams to define the strategy, operations, and communication that guide the development of user-centric products. Your work will span across product strategy, interaction design, visual design, and execution to ensure our products are valuable, intuitive, and of the highest quality.

As a Director, you'll lead the creation of brand-specific consumer experiences, shaping cohesive user journeys across a product family. You will collaborate with teams in Product, Engineering, and other business areas, guiding the design team in developing rapid visual concepts and high-fidelity designs. Our multidisciplinary design team offers the opportunity to work alongside experts in various design fields to create innovative, user-loved products.

You'll inspire your team with clarity and purpose, promoting iteration and innovation as key tools for developing impactful, customer-centered solutions. By aligning the team around a shared vision, you'll foster a sense of ownership and pride in their work.

As a design leader, you'll set and maintain a high standard of excellence for user-centered design, championing the design system as a core tool for consistency and scalability. You'll collaborate closely with teams responsible for evolving and maintaining the design system, ensuring it supports seamless, cohesive solutions.

With deep expertise in the full product development lifecycle, you'll work cross-functionally with Product, Design, Engineering, UX Research, and Writing teams to implement best-in-class processes. You'll help cultivate a culture of connection and belonging through team celebrations, craft showcases, and all-hands meetings, where diverse voices are valued, and creativity thrives.

This role is Hybrid. You should be located within a commutable distance to one of our offices located in Baltimore MD, Charlotte NC, Wilmington DE, Evansville IN, or Dallas/Fort Worth TX.

Target base salary range is $150k - $190k, which is based on various factors including skills, work experience, and location. In addition to base salary, this role is eligible for a competitive additional compensation program that is based on individual and company performance.

  • Experience being a design activator, working to deliver a platform vision and strategy that balances revolutionary framework projects along with a plan for evolutionary, iterative updates to realize a more extensive vision.

  • Success up-leveling design acumen through strategic design sprints, prototyping, and ensuring highly curated end-to-end experiences. Comfortable role modeling and "rolling up your sleeves" to show, teach, and elevate extraordinary designs and products.

  • Experience partnering with a variety of teams, inspiring confidence that your team will deliver compelling user experiences that are cohesive, inclusive, and well informed on time.

  • Demonstrated experience leading a team of product designers and other cross-functional domains, providing mentorship, guidance, and support to foster their growth and development.

  • A keen ability to recognize and elevate craft, ensuring designs are polished, impactful, and user centered. Strong storytelling skills are essential, enabling you to craft compelling narratives that connect design work to broader product strategy and business goals.

  • Experience driving the end-to-end design process, from concept ideation and wireframing to high-fidelity prototyping and user testing, ensuring a seamless and intuitive user experience across all platforms.

  • Ability to advocate for the needs and preferences of our diverse user base data-driven insights to inform design decisions.

  • Highly skilled at effectively communicating design concepts, rationale, and trade-offs to stakeholders at all levels, fostering a culture of collaboration, transparency, and continuous improvement.

Required Qualifications and Skills

The ideal candidate will be highly motivated, dependable, and detail-oriented, with a strong drive to work quickly and effectively within a high-performing, cross-functional product team. We are committed to the iterative process of discovering and delivering exceptional customer experiences. We are seeking the following:

  • 8+ years of experience in Product Design or related fields.

  • 6+ years of leadership experience with direct reports under your guidance and leadership, including hiring and developing senior managers and individual contributors.

  • 8+ years of experience working collaboratively with product, engineering, design, content and user research teams.

  • Deep experience shipping products across platforms and across geos as a designer and coaching others through it.

  • A bachelor's degree in Product Design, Interaction Design, Fine Arts, or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.

  • Appreciation for all forms of design and how they collaborate-interaction, visual, content, motion, and research.

  • Expert proficiency with Figma, Miro, usertesting.com, Dovetail and other relevant domain software consistent with industry standards.

  • Strong portfolio showcasing a range of projects demonstrating your design process, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

  • Strong team management and team building skills. Demonstrated experience in leading and mentoring leads and individual contributors, as well as developing talent and upgrading craft skills.

  • Strong systems thinker with experience defining patterns, style guides, performing user testing, and building low and high-fidelity prototypes.

  • Solid understanding of software development and how to collaborate with developers.

  • Self-starter with exceptional time management and organizational skills with laser-sharp attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Superior communications skills and ability to influence stakeholders across the organization.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous responsibility for resource planning and staffing projects and groups based on the available skills to deliver excellent design solutions on time.

  • Possess a broad and comprehensive understanding of different systems, theories, and practices of design leadership.

  • Identified and set platform strategies, envisioned complex user interactions, and inspired teams to push the boundaries of what's possible.

  • Can communicate complex concepts clearly and persuasively across different audiences and varying levels of the organization.

  • Preferred experience working in a financial services industry, especially consumer lending.
