The Dean of the Willie A. Deese College of Business and Economics reports to the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and, as a member of the Deans Council, works collaboratively with other deans and members of the Academic Affairs staff. The Dean must have demonstrated excellence in leadership within the context of change, 2030 strategic initiatives and significant research expansion; experience in selecting, evaluating, promoting and retaining high quality faculty and staff; innovative and inclusive program development and planning; accreditation oversight; demonstrated capabilities and willingness to obtain significant external funding; managing and allocating financial resources; demonstrated understanding of the need for active student recruitment, retention and student success, including monitoring and tracking metrics; and clear understanding of the importance of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.

Additionally, the Dean must have an interdisciplinary orientation; exemplary communication skills and capabilities to serve as a spokesperson and advocate; a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively; a consensus-building leadership style; a command of the elements of excellence in faculty, staff and department chairs; the ability to support excellence in teaching, research and engagement; and a strong commitment to student success. The Dean must be committed to diversity in its broadest sense and must work to ensure an inclusive environment that supports belonging.

The Dean must also be able to effectively manage the fiscal affairs of the College and maintain excellent working relationships with alumni, the local community, industry partners and the advisory board.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
N.C. A&T, is located in Greensboro, NC. An 1890 land-grant, doctoral, high research activity university, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University prepares students to advance the human condition and facilitate economic growth in North Carolina and beyond by providing a preeminent and diverse educational experience through teaching, research and scholarly application of knowledge.

Founded in 1891, N.C. A&T has built a strong civil rights legacy. The "A&T Four," also referred to as the "Greensboro Four"-who began the sit-in movement at a Woolworth lunch counter in 1960-were freshman students at N.C. A&T. N.C. A&T is an academic community focused on students-providing them with interdisciplinary learning opportunities, faculty renowned for excellence, opportunities to engage in cutting-edge research, and encouraging them to serve their communities.

Thirteen Presidents/Chancellors have served the University since its founding. Dr. James R. Martin II is now leading N.C. A&T with a vision to enhance its research capabilities and academic excellence. The North Carolina A&T Aggies compete in Division I of the NCAA. The university is a member of the Coastal Athletic Association.

Academics and Research. One of the 17 campuses in the University of North Carolina system, N.C. A&T is a high research activity (R2), doctoral-granting university, with 13,487 students in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences; College of Business and Economics, College of Education; College of Engineering; College of Health and Human Sciences; College of Science and Technology; Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering (with UNC-Greensboro); Honors College and The Graduate College. The University offers 59 undergraduate degrees, 35 master's degrees, 11 PhD programs and 43 degree and certificate programs. For the fiscal year 2022-2023, N.C. A&T generated more than $100M in sponsored programs.

The Willie A. Deese College of Business and Economics at North Carolina A&T State University has proudly maintained accreditation by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business ( AACSB International) since 1979. The Accounting accreditation has been in place since 1986. The most recent reaffirmation of accreditation occurred in fall 2016. The Deese College of Business and Economics is a thriving college with a new commitment that includes advancing graduate education, seeking opportunities to establish doctoral programs, advancing graduate education and research expansion.
Minimum Requirements
The candidate should meet one of the two following sets of criteria:

Senior Academic Leader

  • PhD in a business-related discipline from an AACSB International accredited institution;
  • Qualifications appropriate for an appointment to the faculty as a tenured full professor;
  • At least three years of significant senior leadership and administrative experience, in addition to academic service; and
  • Demonstrated success in community/professional engagements across a wide-array of organizations.


Senior Business Professional Leader

  • PhD in a business-related discipline
  • Experience as the chief officer (dean, chair/head, director), president, or similarly ranked senior management position;
  • Significant accomplishments, both within the business sector and in the community;
  • Experience working with universities or other business colleges as a corporate volunteer, trustee, advisor or other volunteer roles;
  • Demonstrated success working with diverse students and supporting student success through programs, special events;
  • Demonstrated success in extramural research funding, facilitating business and economics education, and community/professional engagements across academia;
  • Experience as the chief officer (dean, chair/head, director, etc.), president or similarly ranked senior management role;
  • Evidence of formal leadership development; and
  • Evidence working across disciplines outside of business and economics.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
At least 5 years of academic leadership and administrative experience, in addition to academic service; PhD in Business, Economics or a related discipline and a strong record of success as a visionary and dynamic leader, with keen and demonstrated abilities to work collaboratively in the pursuit of excellence. Successful candidates must also have evidence of insight and talent to leverage the University's many assets to continue to advance the College's role, innovations in research and education, as well as the stature and impact of A&T's business and economics contributions. The successful candidate must achieve significant goals related to graduate and undergraduate student success, university performance metrics and research expansion.
