The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures ( https://foreign.ecu.edu/) is a diverse, research-active, and collegial unit that offers a Bachelor of Arts in Foreign Languages and Literatures with concentration areas including Classical Studies, French, German Studies, Global Studies, and Hispanic Studies; minors in Classical Studies, French, German, and Hispanic Studies; and a Master of Arts in Hispanic Studies. Further, the department embraces the literatures, linguistics, and cultures associated with the languages in our unit. Faculty leaders from the department direct the University's Quality Enhancement Program ( QEP), which aims to develop current students' intercultural competence.
Job Duties
The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures invites applications for three full-time, non-tenure-track, fixed-term, faculty positions at the title of Teaching Instructor, Senior Teaching Instructor, Master Teaching Instructor, Teaching Assistant Professor, Teaching Associate Professor, or Teaching Professor (depending upon qualifications) for the 2025-2026 Academic Year, beginning August 2025. Faculty filling these roles will be expected to provide high-quality undergraduate instruction in Spanish. The expected course load is eight courses per academic year to be offered through 100% online asynchronous teaching at an accelerated pace as part of a new UNC System online education partnership called Project Kitty Hawk ( https://www.northcarolina.edu/project-kitty-hawk/). Project Kitty Hawk, or PKH, is designed to primarily serve adult learners and part-way home students, and it is a critical component of the university's strategic plan. ECU currently offers four online degrees in partnership with PKH, one of which (BA Psychology) requires foreign language competency through level four.

Service to the department and university is expected, namely in areas supporting student recruitment and retention as well as overall online program success.

This position may be eligible for Flexible Work Arrangements ( FWA) ranging from face-to-face to fully remote under the ECU FWA Policy.

Minimum Education/Experience
For an appointment as Teaching Instructor - MA in Hispanic Studies or related field with 18 graduate credit hours in Spanish.

For an appointment as Senior Teaching Instructor -MA in Hispanic Studies or related field with 18 graduate credit hours in Spanish is required in addition to a minimum of three consecutive years of full-time service in the title of Teaching Instructor or have equivalent professional qualifications and have met the following criteria: consistently demonstrated effective teaching and/or other instructional responsibilities and engaged in professional development or professional service activities.

For appointment as Master Teaching Instructor - MA in Hispanic Studies or related field with 18 graduate credit hours in Spanish is required in addition to a minimum of six consecutive years of full-time service in the title of Senior Teaching Instructor or have equivalent professional qualifications and have met the following criteria: Have demonstrated excellence in teaching, have established an excellent professional reputation among colleagues, and is qualified and competent in mentoring others (such as students, instructors, etc.)

For an appointment as Teaching Assistant Professor - PhD in Hispanic Studies or related field is required.

For an appointment as Teaching Associate Professor - PhD in Hispanic Studies or related field is required, with a minimum of three consecutive years of full-time service as Teaching Assistant Professor or have equivalent professional qualifications and have met the following criteria: have consistently demonstrated effective teaching and/or other instructional responsibilities and engaged in professional development or professional service activities.

For an appointment as Teaching Professor - PhD in Hispanic Studies or related field is required, with a minimum of six consecutive years of full-time service in as Teaching Associate Professor or have equivalent professional qualifications and have met the following criteria: have consistently demonstrated effective teaching and/or other instructional responsibilities and engaged in professional development or professional service activities.

Qualifying degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. Native or near-native fluency in Spanish and English is required.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Preference will be given to candidates with experience teaching lower-level undergraduate Spanish language courses online, asynchronously, to adult learners, and who have a demonstrated commitment to teaching.
