BASIC FUNCTION:

The Associate, King Conservation Scholars (seasonal) contributes to the success of Brookfield Zoo Chicago ("BZC") by engaging teens in BZC's mission both at the zoo and in the communities, it serves, including generating consistent, positive exposure for BZC through community relations and outreach, identifying/communicating with/involving community leadership in BZC programs, and representing the institution to diverse constituencies. The primary goal for this position is to foster deeper relationships between teens throughout the Chicagoland area and the natural world.

The pay rate for this position is $19.25 per hour. PRIMARY JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

*Assist in interpretation training and conservation coaching.
*Collaborate with KCSS Teen Leadership Board of Directors to ensure thatprogram protocols, expectations, ideas and action plans are practical and inclusive.
*Serves as an additional point of contact for King Scholars while they are at the zoo, community center or out in the field.
*Provides Fearless Feedback and support for other emerging King Scholar leaders.
Other related duties as assigned to assure successful achievement of Society objectives.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS AND SPECIFICATIONS:

Current and active student in the King Conservation Science Scholars Program at Brookfield Zoo or similar youth engagement community program.
Must be at least 16 years of age.
Must report to work on time.
Ability to work well with others and in a team.
Ability to communicate with the public.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Interest in leadership, conservation or community.
Cultural competency; experience and/or ability to work and interact effectively with a diverse, multicultural audience.

DESIRABLE/PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Multilingual ability, Spanish fluency is a plus.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:This position description summarizes the primary duties and functions of this position, but should not be considered a complete listing of every duty the incumbent may ever be called upon to perform. Must represent Brookfield Zoo Chicago in a professional manner at all times. Incumbent works closely with other staff to plan and provide support for programs and operations. Individual will be expected to be present and visible at BZC events in the community and/or for other events and audiences as requested. This is a seasonal, part-time position requiring some evenings and regular weekend or event work. Must be available to work an average of 25 hours per week, Monday through Friday during Summer (generally the months of June through August.) Must be available to work a flexible weekend schedule of an average of 4 hours per week the remainder of the year. This position requires the ability to move across Zoo grounds, remain stationary for long periods of time an perform work in a variety of weather conditions. Work schedules are based on the needs of the operation. Some local travel around the Chicagoland area is required; other travel may be required.

Tuition Reimbursement	Regular, full-time non-union employees who have at least one year of seniority are eligible to apply for reimbursement of tuition expenses to a maximum of $1,000 per calendar year.
Access Credit Union	Employees are eligible immediately upon employment to participate in the credit union. The minimum balance is $5. Savings are insured up to $100,000, and savings accounts, new and used car loans, personal loans, student loans, and much more are available.
Blackhawk Work Perks	Special offers on Chicago Blackhawks games. Tickets start at $30.

Freebie Table	Consistent with our conservation ethic, we have a "Freebie" table where staff can place unused/unwanted items that still have value for other staff members to claim. This has been a great way to recycle/upcycle by making unused items available to others.
Little Free Library: Take a Book. Share a Book.	The Zoo has a "Little Free Library" book exchange. If an employee sees a book they would like to read, they can take it, or they may donate a book they have finished. When they are done, they can return it to the Little Free Library or leave it at another Little Free Library location for others to enjoy.
Zoo Day Camp Discount	Zoo staff who register their child(ren) for Summer Camp at Brookfield Zoo Chicago receive a discounted price for a week of camp for each child registered. The discount is limited to immediate family members only (grandchildren included). Lunch and T-shirts are not discounted.
Zoo Discounts	Employee discounts are available on BZC gift shop and restaurant purchases, including 25 cent drinks when the Zoo-issued drink cup is used.
