About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants is expanding and looking for a dynamic professional to support the growing Water Resources technical team. We are seeking a Lead Level Hydrogeologist to work directly with our Business Development Resources and other Natural Resources Staff to support projects primarily within the mining sector (precious, base, industrial, energy fuels, rare earths, and aggregate markets), renewable energy sector, as well as the water resources sector across SWCA's business lines.

The ideal candidate will be a mid-career technical expert who is motivated to work in a team environment, serve as a technical expert, manage challenging projects, pursue business development opportunities, and use their expertise to craft a rewarding professional career. This position will be based out of either our Salt Lake City, UT or Phoenix, AZ offices. Hybrid work environments are encouraged. Distributed (= remote) locations for highly qualified candidates will also be seriously considered. This is a regular (with benefits), salaried, exempt, full-time position that can be fully remote.

The requisition can hire people at three levels:

  • Lead Hydrogeologist: Typically with a minimum of eight (8) years of relevant experience and expertise.
  • Senior Hydrogeologist: Typically with a minimum of ten (10) years of relevant experience and expertise.
  • Principal Hydrogeologist: Typically with a minimum of twelve (12) years of relevant experience and expertise.

What you will accomplish

As a Lead Level Hydrogeologist, your role will be as a technical expert in groundwater systems with skills in field data collection, data analysis, modeling and statistics, and geochemistry. You will work throughout the western United States with the potential to work on international projects in the future. A senior hydrogeologist will be expected to lead larger and more complicated tasks and projects. Key responsibilities may include:

  • Provide upfront technical support to a range of clients including permitting and exploration, project development, and on-going project monitoring and reporting.
  • Conduct hydrogeologic analyses for a variety of clients and projects including aquifer characterization, aquifer recharge studies, water supply assessments, and NEPA impact analyses.
  • Design and oversee field studies to describe existing hydrogeology in systems of many sizes and scale.
  • Manage and guide large strategic permitting, owner's environmental, NEPA and closure/reclamation support projects.
  • Bring client perspective to current services and key understanding of client needs to support their value chain.
  • Use statistical and modeling tools to develop complex water balances, investigate groundwater and surface water interactions, and evaluate hydrogeologic impacts associated with future climate and water management scenarios.
  • Manage and analyze large high-frequency datasets and make effective use of publicly available datasets for projects (e.g. USGS, state water rights databases).
  • Lead and assist with efforts to create analytical data tools, dashboards, or other visual and/or written reporting deliverables.
  • Ensure project quality, schedule, and budget objectives.
  • Drive compliance of safety policies and reporting requirements to ensure overall team safety.
  • Work closely with resource teams, project managers, and senior leadership throughout the company to promote SWCA's business interests in adherences to its mission, vision, and values.

Experience and qualifications for success

REQUIRED

  • Bachelor degree in geology, hydrogeology, geological engineering, hydrology, geochemistry, or related technical field.
  • Minimum of at least eight (8) years of water resources project experience, with an emphasis on groundwater systems and the mining or energy sectors.
  • A working knowledge of the regulations that apply to the mining sector, energy sector, and water resources management in the western United States.
  • Proven experience with hydrogeological analyses, field efforts, and statistical analysis of large complex data sets.
  • Strong computer skills for database work and proficiency in MS Office
  • Strong understanding of engineering, geohydrology, geochemistry, etc.
  • Experience with data analysis and modeling tools such as: Surfer, QGIS, Civil3D, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, HY-8, PHREEQC, MODFLOW 6, MT3DMS, R, Aquifer Test, Adobe Acrobat, WinSitu.
  • Deliver project results within a management framework that enables the practice to thrive with respect to quality, safety, cost, administrative support, and policy compliance.

PREFERRED OR HELPFUL

  • Graduate degree in geology, hydrogeology, geological engineering, hydrology, geochemistry, or related technical field.
  • Minimum of at least ten (10) years of water resources project experience, with an emphasis on groundwater systems and the mining or energy sectors.
  • Previous experience in environmental consulting.

An employee in this Salt Lake City, UT based position can expect an annual salary of: Lead Hydrogeologist -- $86,150/year to $109,960/year; Senior Hydrogeologist -- $97,490/year to $124,696/year; Principal Hydrogeologist -- $109,959 to $140,566.40. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
