The Position

The Principal / Sr. Principal Project Manager leads the implementation of various SSF site-wide construction projects throughout all phases of execution. The budget range of these projects will each be over $50M and may range up to $1 Billion or more.

The project portfolio consists of many projects, this role is intended to lead the largest and most complex of those. Near term projects may include a new research building or new ground up vivarium.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leading and managing the assigned projects from the project initiation stage through project closeout, under the direction of a Senior Director \ Project Director.

  • Ensure project planning and execution deliverables adheres to Engineering Manual (Roche \ Genentech project delivery process) requirements, project management processes, Global Standards and Processes, and other Roche Guidelines and Directives. Ensure project execution utilizing industry and Roche's best practices.

  • Ensure that projects meet intended functionality while controlling cost and schedule.

  • Key tasks include defining the scope and priorities for the project, documenting and vetting the business case, managing internal and external stakeholders, leading project design and construction meetings, managing and updating the project schedule, managing the project budget, obtaining purchase orders, approving invoices, updating the project Cora Systems database (as well as any other cost control or document management system defined for use on the project), as well as creating formal written monthly reports to Design and Construction management on each project.

  • Act as an advocate for beneficial/improved new processes, procedures, technologies and techniques within and beyond Roche.

  • The Principal \ Sr. Principal Project Manager will be responsible to present to senior leadership at various stages of the project. Each large project typically has a monthly Steering Committee meeting, which the incumbent will be responsible for creating the content and presenting. The audience ranges from the Executive Director of Design and Construction, up to a Steering Committee for each project composed of Vice President(s), Executive Director(s) and Senior Director(s), and on occasion the most senior levels of Roche\Genentech leaders.

  • Participate in process improvement initiatives.

  • The Principal \ Senior Principal Project Manager is not primarily a people manager, but may manage one or two direct reports providing project assignments and mentoring, coaching and developing them to succeed in their roles. This may take the form of support project managers working under this role on a very large, multi project manager project.

Skills and Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering with a preference for civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical or related fields, or architecture.

  • Certification in Project Management (i.e. PMI certification) or additional relevant management training desirable.

  • Minimum of 15 years' experience (SE7) or 18 years (SE8) in a Project Management role, Engineering, Facilities, Planning, or related field. Demonstrated excellent communication, decision making, leadership, interpersonal, collaborative, conflict resolution, and negotiating skills.

  • If the role is filled an at (SE8) Senior Principal Project Manager level, the candidate is expected to have experience delivering at least two (2) new ground up buildings for Roche\Genentech, or their equivalent in a similar role.

  • Demonstrate excellent communication (written/verbal), leadership, interpersonal, collaborative, conflict resolution, and negotiating skills.

  • Exceptional teamwork and collaboration skills are essential to facilitate the work of cross-functional and interdepartmental teams.

The expected salary range for this position, based on the primary location of California, is $140,900 - $261,700 (SE7), $156,700 - $290,900 (SE8) USD Annual.Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
