Summary of Position

The Histology Technician will perform the various tasks required for receiving, processing, and preparing patient tissue specimens for microscopic examination and analysis by the Pathologist. This may include logging, batching, and cutting, mounting and staining procedures. Tissue specimens received from surgical, diagnostic, or autopsy cases are sorted, logged, and prioritized according to the standards required. Upon receiving written or verbal orders from physicians or their designees, the Histology Technician will coordinate daily workflow of tasks and activities in the surgical pathology area with regard to routine procedures, special procedures, and the surgery schedule.

Performance Requirements

Embed, cut and stain tissue blocks according to designated procedures



  • Orient tissues with accuracy
  • Maintain and clean molds and embedding center according to established procedures at completion of embedding
  • Scan blocks and print labels according to protocol
  • Handwrite number and initial slides with accuracy when print labels are not available
  • Learns how to recognize and troubleshoot instrument malfunctions. Notifies supervisors and co-workers of problems and assists them in resolving equipment and/or procedural issues
  • Perform hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) stain according to established procedure for site specific Stainer and coverslip systems
  • Label slides and correlate with paperwork with accuracy
  • Learns how to correlate all previous histology slides with current/previous histology and histo/cyto correlation cases
  • Correctly routes slides to the proper location and pathologist


Assists in Performing Advanced Staining (Cytochemical Special Stains, Immunohistochemistry-IHC, IN Situ Hybridization)



  • Stains slides to specified procedures
  • Selects appropriate tissue control according to procedure
  • Compare control and patient slides for desired results
  • Recognize and troubleshoot inadequate or inappropriate staining. Works with department leadership to solve problems
  • Route completed slides to appropriate locations and pathologists
  • Record all quality control data on appropriate forms, checklists and charts
  • Supervisor must be notified when results are outside limits at all times


Prepare reagents and stains according to prescribed procedures



  • Date reagents and stains when put into service
  • Prepare reagents and stains according to procedure
  • Label container according to procedure
  • Learns what a sufficient inventory of reagents and stains is required for the department
  • Assists in ordering reagents and stains if necessary
  • Follow appropriate safety protocols for handling hazardous chemicals
  • Be aware of expiration dates on all reagents and stains


Related Duties



  • Provide back up for Lab Assistants and Grossing Tech when needed
  • Utilize the Vantage software to scan the specimen container and print cassettes while maintaining accuracy and integrity of the specimens
  • Verify cassette are numbered appropriately by comparing cassette to specimen container numbering
  • Ink, measure and section the specimen if needed
  • Properly submit specimen according to procedure
  • Load and select the proper processing program and start tissue processor


Assists in maintaining equipment, instruments and supplies as needed



  • Perform quality control procedures in the Histology laboratory
  • Perform daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly maintenance according to schedule and record work completed
  • Record all quality control data. Supervisor must be notified when results are outside limits at all times
  • Maintain maintenance charts, temperature charts, workload information, preventative maintenance records, etc. on a daily basis
  • Run computer logs at specified times


Becomes knowledgeable of current CAP requirements



  • Keeps up to date with CAP requirements


  • Complies with CAP requirements


Qualifications

Knowledge/Experience

Minimum Qualifications:



  • Associates degree in a science AND
  • HT ASCP certified


OR



  • Bachelor's degree in a science AND
  • HTL ASCP certified


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Previous on-the-job Histology Lab experience
  • Knowledge in medical terminology


Lab Specific Qualifications:



  • May be required to lift routine office supplies and use standard office equipment.
  • Must be able to pass a color vision test.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
  • Work hours: Monday-Friday with occasional evening, weekend, and holiday duties.
