Reporting to the Senior Director of Enterprise Data Science, the Principal Data Scientist is a senior-level experienced scientist with a problem-solving mindset, responsible for analyzing data, uncovering the underlying data patterns and logic, and developing data-driven applications using innovative methods in data science such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, and large language models. These techniques will be used to build cutting-edge solutions to support healthcare operations and to help us with our vision of "A Healthier World".
The Principal Data Scientist is responsible for developing solutions for the entire problem-solving cycle: finding/prioritizing the problems, researching the best algorithms to solve them, designing robust, practical solvers, and implementing them in the health care environment. The ultimate purpose of the Principal Data Scientist work is developing solutions making hospital operations more efficient, reliable, and integrated, improving staff productivity and patient satisfaction.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
*Develops and/or uses advanced AI/ Machine Learning (ML) and predictive modeling techniques to solve business problems.
*Consults with clinical leaders to understand problems and goals and translate these needs into advanced analytics solutions.
*Wrangles structured and unstructured data to identify patterns and provide meaningful insights to the stakeholders which would aid in decision making.
*Leads large, complex projects involving coordination with multiple stakeholders and delegation of tasks to junior team members.
*Reviews code written by others, enforcing coding guidelines and best practices.
*Collaborate across multiple teams.
*Communicate predictive model results to clinical leaders and stakeholders through presentations prepared for audiences at various levels of leadership and technical expertise.
*Provide on-going tracking and monitoring of performance of models and recommend ongoing improvements to methods and algorithms that lead to findings, including new information.
*Mentors junior data scientists and data analysts.
*Other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Education

  • Masters' or Ph.D. degree required in computer science, biomedical informatics, statistics/biostatistics, mathematics, epidemiology, economics/econometrics, or related disciplines.

Experience in the field of data science 5-7 years required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Experience with healthcare industry.
  • Clinically oriented background with knowledge and understanding of medical coding including ICD, CPT, DRG etc.
  • 5-7 years of experience of hands-on modeling skills and strong analytical programming skills using R/Python.
  • 5-7 years of experience manipulating large datasets and using databases, including proficiency in tools such as SQL or Spark.
  • Strong background in statistics and experimental methodology, including expertise in hypothesis testing, experimental design, statistical modeling, and the interpretation of results to drive data-informed decision-making.
  • Demonstrated experience with data mining and predictive modeling techniques such as tree-based methods, SVM, neural networks, Bayesian modeling techniques and Large Language Models (LLM).
  • Familiarity and experience with agile development principles and git.
  • Deep understanding of platforms such as Snowflake, Microsoft Azure, and Databricks to analyze large data sets from multiple sources.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Self-motivated and demonstrate ability to quickly understand new concepts-all the way down to algorithms-and to come out with original solutions to issues.
