Job Summary

Under general supervision, provides laboratory testing in the areas of histology and immunohistochemistry and is responsible for histology laboratory management including full compliance with CAHFS quality system, and training additional personnel, as required. Participates in development activities with regard to new procedures and provides backup support to other laboratory sections.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • B.S. degree in a scientific discipline or equivalent work experience in histology including theory and application as it specifically pertains to diagnostic testing.
  • Experience performing histology techniques, understand written protocols & equipment including tissue processors, embedders, microtomes, automated slide stainers, cryostat, biosafety cabinets, fume hoods, centrifuges, antigen decloaker, pipettes, calculators, balances, & pH meter
  • Skills to judge the quality of staining procedures and determine necessary adjustments for optimal quality; investigate, troubleshoot, resolve, and document actions related to assay failures and improvement of existing techniques.
  • Knowledge & skill to perform routine dilutions, preparation of staining solutions, and associated calculations.
  • Familiarity with fresh &/or fixed tissues, including bone, eyes, skin, brain, etc.
  • Knowledge of and ability to follow laboratory/University safety protocols including appropriate disposal of waste solvents and biohazardous materials.

Preferred Qualifications

  • ASCP certified Histotechnician or Histotechnologist (preferrable)
  • Knowledge & skill to perform histology & immunohistochemistry techniques.
  • Knowledge to grossly identify processed tissue type to aid in the trimming and embedding processes.
  • Knowledge of and ability to work in a quality system environment adhering to all policies and procedures that ensure the highest quality of laboratory testing.
  • Ability to tolerate strong odors and the sight of exposed animal tissues and blood products. This position may, at times, require the incumbent to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present.
  • Skills to evaluate and implement new procedures/techniques.

Department Overview

CAHFS provides California's livestock and poultry industries, and veterinary practitioners who serve them, with a full range of diagnostic laboratory services for disease control, enhancement of animal health management, and protection from diseases common to animal and humans. In meeting this need, the CAHFS also serves as the backbone of California's animal disease warning system through its surveillance programs. CAHFS consists of four branch laboratories currently located in Davis, Turlock, Tulare and San Bernardino. Funding for CAHFS is provided through a contract with the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) and through revenue generated from user fees. An additional program, the Equine Analytical Chemistry Laboratory, is funded through a contract with the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB) and horse wagering monies and provides full-service drug testing and an equine pharmacology research and program.

This position is subject to UCD's vaccination program (Influenza, SARS-CoV-2, is/might subject to prophylactic vaccination for rabies), and Medical/Health Surveillance Program/Procedures/Review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 8:00am - 5:00pm (Work schedule might be slightly different during the training period). Work flexible schedule/overtime as needed to complete projects and meet deadlines. Mandatory weekend and holiday rotation. Restricted/Limited vacation during peak workload periods (i.e. Outbreaks, Fiscal Close, Audits Periods, etc). Occasional travel to CAHFS branch laboratories, conferences, etc.
