Peer Support Worker (Journey Project)

SOME (So Others Might Eat) provides material aid and comfort to our vulnerable neighbors in the District of Columbia, helping them to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness through programs and services that save lives, improve lives, and help to transform the lives of individuals and families, their communities, and the systems and structures that affect them. Compensation:

We offer our employees a competitive compensation and benefits package that reflects our organizational culture, mission, and core values. The hourly range for this position is $23.54 - $24.89 and is commensurate with experience.

The Peer Support Worker provides outreach to current and future SOME clients. Assist clients with basic case management services (i.e. vital records, insurance, benefits) as well as education and support around recovery tasks (e.g., problem solving, peer support group, accompany to appointments as needed).

Funding Disclaimer:

This position supports the Journey Project, a program at SOME that assists victims of gun violence. This position is granted funded and dependent on the renewal of grant funding each year. If the outside funding is no longer present, the position will be evaluated for renewal dependent upon SOME unrestricted funding at that time.

Qualifications:

Required: HS Diploma/GED or 2+ years work experience; Minimum 1+ year in recovery. Prefer experience running support groups or performing basic case management tasks.

Required License/Certification: CPR/First-Aid; Peer Support Specialist certification or willing to obtain certification.

Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm (40 hours per week)

Expected Contributions/Case Management and Program Activity Development:

• Assist clients with referrals to needed resources (e.g. Vital Documents, Insurance enrollment, Basic Needs Referrals, Benefits enrollment support, Housing Resources, SPDATS, Transportation coaching, Employment resources).
• Conduct client sessions around problem solving barriers to treatment adherence (e.g. transportation challenges, medication compliance issues and scheduling challenges).
• Conduct peer support groups to promote and re-enforce recovery skills.
• Provide consultation to staff about recovery.
• Complete encounter notes from client sessions within 24 hours and maintain chart documentation.
• Consult with clinicians and providers as needed to link clients to appropriate medical, dental, and behavioral health services.
• Accompany clients to community appointments, as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: .

• Lived experience with substance abuse, trauma and/or mental health issues.
• Basic knowledge of steps involved in meaningful recovery.
• Ability to build rapport with a diverse audience.
• Ability to maintain professional boundaries.
• Self management skills and ability to give and receive feedback.
• Knowledge of community and social services resources within DC.
• Proficient with MS Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Reports to: Program Manager

Position Designation: This position is designated as Safety Sensitive. You may be subject to drug testing prior to or during your employment with SOME. In this position, you may be disqualified from employment based on the presence of marijuana in test results, even if you possess a medical card authorizing the use of medical marijuana.

Physical Demands: Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds. Requires looking at a computer screen for several hours a day. May be required to sit or stand for long periods
