Summary of Position

Under minimal supervision, coordinates, oversees, and performs routine and specialized activities related to the operation of the cytogenetics laboratory. Develops protocols, coordinates work flow and oversees quality control in specialized areas of the laboratory.

Key Job Elements



  • Charts/Records: Records pertinent laboratory data on the appropriate form or chart to ensure accurate and complete documentation of laboratory findings.
  • Meetings: Actively participates in regularly scheduled lab meetings to present pertinent information and to remain abreast of changes and activities in the laboratory area.
  • Microscopy/Analysis: Analyzes selected banded metaphase spreads and/or interphase nuclei under the microscope or on the monitor for genetic abnormalities with 98% accuracy.
  • Productivity: Keeps a daily work log and surpasses the industry standard of 4 full cases for karyotyping and/or 60 probes for FISH analyzed per day.
  • Imaging: Uses specialized equipment to capture and enhance images at optimum resolution for karyotyping.
  • Professional Development: Attends in-services, reads professional literature, and participates in educational programs and activities to remain abreast of developments in the field of cytogenetics. Participates in proficiency testing.
  • Protocol (Revision): Designs and assists in the development of new protocols. Identifies ways in which laboratory procedures and activities can be modified to improve upon current methodologies.
  • Quality Assurance: Ensure compliance with quality control policies and procedures to ensure that all aspects of laboratory operation are performed in accordance with accepted standards and applicable laws for clinical laboratories.
  • Resource: Acts as a technical resource for less experienced personnel regarding laboratory procedures.
  • Safety: Practices universal precautions measures necessary for the handling of body fluids.
  • Leadership: Assists in overseeing work in one or more areas of specialized laboratory activity.


Qualifications

Knowledge/Experience



  • Bachelor's degree in biology or related field.
  • Five or more years of experience in a cytogenetics laboratory.
  • Certified as a Cytogenetic Technologist by ASCP.
  • Laboratory personnel participating in licensure or certification maintenance programs must complete the number of continuing education hours prescribed by their licensing or certifying agency.
  • Technical laboratory personnel whose certification has been grandfathered and does not require participation in a certification maintenance program must complete at least twelve hours of continuing education annually.
