Job Summary

This position plays a dual role in supporting Department functions in the Decedent Affairs - Autopsy Scheduling unit and Laboratory Client Services. This position primarily facilitates the submission and attestation of death certificates for UCDH patients. Other duties include scheduling of Autopsy requests, completing chain-of-custody for release of remains to funeral homes and facilitating organ procurement. Other duties include the receipt and reporting of any clinical lab specimen results to be prepared or processed by the UCD Health Pathology and Lab Medicine Department via all means of communication, e.g., telephone, fax, email, website portal, etc. Specimens handled include various body fluids, tissue and fecal matter. This position requires the ability to abide by HIPAA regulations and ensure that all required documentation is cataloged, accurate and in compliance with all regulations. Ensures patient and physician notice and rescheduling of lab canceled procedures. Other duties include filing and recordkeeping.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 6 months experience in healthcare/funeral home industry
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology, basic human anatomy and clinical knowledge to complete assigned tasks and meet department business needs.
  • Demonstrated customer service skills.
  • Ability to maintain records legibly and accurately.
  • Knowledge and ability to operate a personal computer.
  • Reading skills to understand procedures, protocols, and policies.
  • Visual acuity is required to perform activities such as reading thermometers, charts and finely ruled divisions.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • EDRS & FDRS (State Death Certificate System) Training
  • 1 year or greater in healthcare or funeral home industry
  • Experience working with vital records departments including but not limited to death record submissions, attestations & amendments
  • Experience with legal documentation and consents.
  • Patient Transport & chain of custody experience.
  • Knowledge of State Health & Safety code as it pertains to deceased individuals.
  • Specimen handling experience.

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is a large, diverse multi-site department whose mission is to create a healthier world through bold innovation in population health, education, technology and research. Work Environment

Must be able to work overtime as needed and rotate weekends, holidays and "on call" hours per departmental staffing policies. Must follow Standard Precautions, dress code policy, and all other departmental and hospital policies. Must possess the ability to cope with exposure to patients and contaminated specimens.
