Provides assistance, technical support and services to Ophthalmologists including taking patient medical histories, administrating diagnostic tests, assisting during treatment and surgical procedures while acquiring on the job training for the COA certification.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE: 1. High school diploma or equivalent. 2. Ophthalmic Assistant Certification obtained through JCAHPO within one (1) year of hire date. 3. Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date. CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position. They are not intended to be constructed as an all-inclusive list of all responsibilities and duties. Other duties may be assigned. 1. Escorts patients to exam rooms. 2. Obtains and records accurate patient histories to include chief complaint, present ocular status, ocular history, and family history, past and present medical history, medications and allergies. 3. Obtains and records accurate visual acuity of adult, children and infant patients. 4. Performs Visual Field Testing, basic lensometry and keratometry. 5. Measures and records spectacle prescriptions both manually and with automated equipment 6. Performs basic ocular motility testing and record results. 7. Measures and compares basic pupil assessments. 8. Tests intraocular pressure with applanation tonometer and tonopen. 9. Performs and record slit lamp exam 10. Cleans and sterilizes ophthalmic instruments and maintain ophthalmic equipment. 11. Stocks examination rooms with supplies on a daily basis, maintain clinic inventory, and ensure working order of equipment. 12. Maintains universal precautions 13. Moves equipment to other testing areas of the clinic or hospital 14. Participates in educational instruction and independent study in preparation for COA Certification 15. Under the supervision of the provider, or certified technician, may perform more advance patient testing and advanced skills in order to obtain sufficient on the job training to meet the qualifications needed to acquire the COA certification required at one year of service. 16. Certification eligible testing assistants may administer topical ocular medications PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Work requires strength and /or stamina, lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing for long intervals ,frequent walking, and carrying materials or pushing equipment weighing 40 + lbs. 2. Vision correctable to at least 20/30 in one eye. WORKING ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. May be exposed to biohazards and communicable disease. 2. The incumbent will work in the presence of ophthalmic lasers frequently and be required to wear protective eye equipment. 3. May work with blood, lab specimens, and other patient bodily fluids that require universal precautions. 4. Travel to offsite clinics may be required SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 1. The ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously in a high volume clinic 2. Ability to operate ophthalmic equipment and computers. 3. Analytical skills are desirable to complete the technical aspects of patient examinations.
