Summary:

Reports to Pharmacy Director. Under the supervision of a Pharmacy Supervisor within assigned area of responsibility is responsible for activities and functions of pharmacy group leaders pharmacy technician specialists pharmacy technicians pharmacy student interns and technician externs hereafter referred to as pharmacy technicians in assigned areas of the department. Assists with the creation of job roles and responsibilities develops assignments assigns work creates and maintains work schedules and designs training plans. Manages schedules to ensure they are equitable and support the operational needs of the department. Holds pharmacy technician staff accountable for performance and professionalism. Prepares and issues formal performance evaluations. Collaborates with supervisors managers and directors to develop goals for the department and implement new workflow initiatives.

Responsibilities:

Is responsible for knowing and acting in accordance with the principles of the Lifespan Corporate Compliance Program and Code of Conduct.

Supervises the work of pharmacy technician group leaders pharmacy technician specialists pharmacy technicians pharmacy student interns and technician externs hereafter referred to as pharmacy technicians.

Assists with the creation of job roles and responsibilities develops assignments assigns work creates and maintains work schedules and designs training plans. Provides functional guidance to pharmacy technicians in assigned areas of responsibility. Prepares and issues annual performance evaluations.

Supervises day to day activities within assigned area of responsibility to ensure compliance with established policies procedures and relevant labor contracts.

Reviews and analyzes operations. Recommends changes to increase efficiency. Supervises implementation of operational changes.

Participates in the recruitment retention development and competency assessment of pharmacy technicians in collaboration with management team.

Develops standards and tools to establish and to improve the competency of pharmacy technicians including orientation of new employees in-service training and demonstrable competencies.

Provides actionable feedback to pharmacy technicians to promote teamwork and satisfaction in the workplace in consultation with Pharmacy Supervisor Manager or Director.

Communicates effectively with pharmacy technicians to facilitate the flow of operations. Provides timely and accurate communication both written and verbal as appropriate regarding operational changes and continuous quality improvement activities including goals and objectives of the Pharmacy as they relate to assigned areas of responsibility.

Mentors and coaches pharmacy technicians to assist them in defining and realizing their personal professional goals.

Participates in department-wide continuous quality assessment and performance improvement activities and medication safety initiatives within their assigned area of responsibility. Supervises the quality assessment process to ensure it is completed accurately and timely. Participates in various committees task forces and performance improvement teams as assigned.

Supervises routine preventive maintenance to equipment utilized in assigned area of responsibility according to established protocols. Supervises drug refilling processes and associated quality safety checks as assigned.

Supervises the maintenance of pharmacy information systems electronic drug dispensing system (EDDS) technology and other computerized or automated hardware and software used in the procurement preparation or distribution of pharmaceuticals and related supplies as assigned. Oversees sterile compounding operations and ensures compliance with state and federal regulations [i.e. United States Pharmacopeia (USP) General Chapter <797> and General Chapter <800>] as assigned.

Oversees non-sterile compounding operations and ensures compliance with state and federal regulations [i.e. USP General Chapter <800> and General Chapter <795>] as assigned.

Monitors the distribution of medications to pharmacy satellites and off-site treatment areas as assigned.

Oversees medication and pharmaceutical supply purchasing processes. Participates in the coordination of the recall process. Assists with the oversight of the annual medication inventory. Ensures quarterly quality assurance inspections are completed as assigned.

Performs duties of other pharmacy technician job categories as needed.

Provides other supervisor duties as assigned.

Other information:

QUALIFICATIONS - EDUCATION:

High school graduate or equivalent required. Completion of one to two years of college preferred.

Maintains current unrestricted Rhode Island Pharmacy Technician licensure.

Holds and maintains current National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT).

QUALIFICATIONS - EXPERIENCE:

Two to three years of experience as a technician group leader or technician specialist preferably gained at a Lifespan affiliate or five years of progressively more responsible technician experience preferably gained at a Lifespan affiliate.

Effective interpersonal and communication skills both written and verbal.

Possesses basic computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possesses physical ability to lift carry and maneuver medication delivery equipment and pharmaceutical related inventories including extended periods of work time spent standing and walking.

Requires the visual and manual dexterity to operate a computer.

Occasional travel between facilities or sites is required.

INDEPENDENT ACTION:

Performs independently within department policies and practices

Refers specific complex problems to the Pharmacy Director Manager or Supervisor where clarification of departmental policies and procedures may be required.

SUPERVISION:

Indirect supervision of up to 25 FTEs.
