Summary: Genetic Counselor Supervisor (GCS) will be an integral member of the Genetic care team at Brown University Health. Under the general supervision of Director of Human Genetics Department of Pediatrics. GCS is responsible for the development of competencies and organization of the genetic counseling services including coverage scheduling evaluation educational and licensing requirements of genetic counselors within the Brown University Health. GCS will serve as role models and promotes professional practice standards to meet all accreditation and certification requirements. In collaboration with faculty in genetics oncology and other related specialties in the care and management of patients requiring genetic counseling services. Responsibilities: Develops and maintains on-going competency validation education programs for the Genetic Counselor Providers including maintenance of ABGC certification and RI/MA licensures. Maintains appropriate documentation of competencies accreditation and certification achievements. Develops operating goals and objectives for the unit by working closely with lead in the area; implements and administers methods and procedures to enhance operations in accordance with departmental metrics. Identifies and delegates genetic counselor participation presentation and outreach activities for specific programs and/or projects as appropriate Participates in the hiring of Genetic Counselors including initial review of applications and selection of candidates and participation in the interviewing and final selection process. Establishes schedule of orientation and conducts periodic review with new practitioner to insure successful transition into professional role. Supervise genetic counselors with provisional licensures Evaluates and conducts the annual performance evaluation of the genetic counselors. Collaborates with other medical services and departments within the hospital including participation on department and hospital wide teams to promote quality outcomes for patients receiving genetic services. Develops schedules for the genetic counselors maintaining clinical coverage as required. Regularly scheduled Genetic Counselor group meeting to assist in identifying issues/concerns and address them in collaboration with clinic staff As a genetic counselor obtains and records medical and family histories records physical examinations reviews medical records develops counseling plans and follow-up plans. Acts as payroll coordinator for Genetic Counselors Performs other clinical and administrative functions within the area of genetic counseling as deemed appropriate by the Director. Provides educational opportunities for medical students residents and genetic counseling students as appropriate. Performs advanced practice skills and participates in program development under the supervision of the Division Director. Assists the healthcare team to achieve mutually agreed upon healthcare goals by providing necessary support education and encouragement. Maintains Quality Assurance safety environmental and infection control in accordance with established hospital department policies procedures and objectives. Advocates for the role and growth of genetic counselors within the Department of Genetics and within Lifespan Other information: BASIC KNOWLEDGE: Master in Genetic Counseling. Board Certification by American Board of Genetic Counseling Licensed in the State of Rhode Island as a Genetic Counselor EXPERIENCE: Minimum of eight years* experience as a genetic counselor in a clinical setting. Must demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills and effective prioritization and organizational skills. Experience should demonstrate effective organizational leadership and communications skills. WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: General hospital environment with occasional stressful conditions associated with direct patient care.
