POSITION SUMMARY
Registered Nurses on the Medical/Surgical unit provide direct care to patients and are a part of all care given by other departments. They will support the Swing Bed Unit to include providing a stable, rehabilitative environment for patients to recover over a short-term period and post hospitalization short-term rehabilitation. The nursing staff work closely with other modalities to provide treatment services in a structured, therapeutic environment. Registered Nurses must continually strive to provide the highest quality of care possible for the patients. They must also lead the nursing team toward the achievement of the goals of the Cuyuna Regional Medical Center. High quality care and overall efficiency are essential components to this success.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
RN:
- Exercise concern for the patient's welfare, maintains knowledge of the patient's condition, administers medication, and performs treatment while practicing and maintaining high ethical standards.
- Responsible for the direct and indirect care of assigned patients.
- Provide appropriate care for patients who will be undergoing or are recovering from orthopedic surgery.
- Maintain accurate and complete records of nursing assessments and care and counsels of the patient and family in meeting nursing and related needs.
- Remain up to date on new nursing skills and technology utilizing the nursing process (observation, assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation) in the delivery of care.
- Perform duties in accordance with physician's orders, the Medical Center's policies, methods, and techniques, and in coordinating with other departments and Medical Center personnel.
- Provides leadership and promotes teamwork.
- When requested, participates in in-service programs, education programs, and orientation of new personnel.
- Demonstrate Standards of Excellence when other duties are assigned.
Charge Nurse:
- Assesses staffing requirements and makes assignments based on acuity and census and ensures adequate and safe staffing for each shift.
- Handles bed control for admissions, discharges and transfers.
- Assists and supports staff with all levels of patient care delivery, including Medical, Surgical, ICU, OB, and ED.
- Performs pharmacy duties as appropriate when pharmacist is not available.
- Coordinates and directs the daily patient care operations for the department of nursing.
- Analyzes workloads and skill requirements to meet patient care needs.
- Assesses staff competencies and makes patient care assignments.
- Delegates appropriate tasks to appropriate personnel, consistent with legal and professional guidelines and departmental standards.
- Maintains clear communications with the Chief Nursing Officer and Nurse Manager regarding nursing needs and/or incidents.
- Serves as a resource person in all identified areas.
- Completes initial individual unit competencies appropriate to charge nurse role.
- Maintains competency by both seeking out opportunities to work in these areas and completing unit specific ongoing education.
- Assists with patient care as needed.
- Identifies appropriate internal controls for department; provides mechanisms to monitor and enforce compliance.
- Acts as a facilitator for employee experiencing on the job injuries, connecting them to appropriate resources.
Postpartum RN:
- Consult and coordinate with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate mother and infant care plans.
- Provide consistent optimal care to mother and baby to include assisting with hygienic needs of mother and baby, assessment of mother's pain, timely and accurate mother and infant vital signs, and mother-baby bonding.
- Involve family/significant others in implementing best practices for mother and infant care.
- Record all care information concisely, accurately and completely, in a timely manner.
- Provide education to mother on aftercare items and skills for caring for a newborn.
