Part-time Chemistry Laboratory Assistant (up to 19.75 hours per week)

Under the direction of the Chemistry Lab Supervisor, the primary purpose of this position is to apply technical knowledge and laboratory experience in order to assist the short and long term functions of the chemistry laboratories.To attain these goals, the candidate will coordinate and implement the set-up of student laboratory exercises, in support of all courses within the Chemistry Area of the STEM Department, including chemical solution preparation and analysis, hazardous waste handling, and assisting with the training and direction of student workers in the absence of the Chemistry Lab Supervisor.

PRIMARY DUTIES

  • Apply technical knowledge and experience to support the day-to-day operations of the Chemistry Laboratory, under the supervision of the Chemistry Lab Supervisor.

  • Assist with the set-up and breakdown of laboratory experiments.

  • Assist with preparing and standardizing chemical solutions to keep up with a high demand.

  • Direct and guide student workers when the Lab Supervisor is off-site.

  • Apply technical knowledge, experience, and safety training to make responsible decisions in the laboratory.

  • Assist with planning student workload to prioritize lab duties efficiently.

  • Assist with maintaining inventories of, and proper handling and storage of, chemical reagents.

  • Safely handle hazardous materials, sharps and biohazardous waste, and follow protocols for safe disposal under the direction of the Lab Supervisor.

  • May assist with maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the laboratory prep rooms and supplies.

  • May assist with calibrating and maintaining laboratory equipment.

  • Incumbents may apply technical knowledge and experience to set priorities and organize work. Job duties are diverse and require good decision making derived from established protocols and policies; for example, duties can range from simply recognizing the need to prepare more chemical media, to troubleshooting an experiment or responding to a safety concern.

HOURLTE RATE $22.3843

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate's degree or HS diploma plus 1 to 3 years of experience working in a chemistry laboratory or related field; hands-on laboratory experience from chemistry coursework may be considered.

  • Ability to communicate in written and oral form and work well with others in a team environment.

  • Highly organized and proactive with the ability to work independently and prioritize in a fast-paced environment.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
